History of Vibration

Vibration Exercise technology started in the Soviet Space Program
when Russian scientists discovered that cosmonauts that spent
extended amounts of time in space experienced significant loss in
bone density and muscle tissue in zero gravity. Russian researchers
found that by using this vibration equipment they could not only
stop the loss, but incredibly, increase bone density and strengthen
muscles.
The Russians were able to set a record of more than 420 days in outer
space in 1994/1995 using Whole Body Vibration. The American
astronauts, were forced to return after just 120 days due to bone and
muscle degeneration. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Vibration
Exercise technology found its way to other countries. Today NASA
uses Vibration Exercise technology in their regular space training
program.

Dr Belinda Beck, senior lecturer at Griffith University's School of Physiotherapy and
Exercise Science, said there was some evidence that low intensity loading performed at a
sufficiently high frequency may also improve bone mass.
She has recently received funding to test the effects of a whole body vibration device -- a
platform that participants stand on while it vibrates at up to 30 cycles per second. "Bone
generally responds to exercise that is high intensity.“
Dr Beck said the device was originally designed to enhance muscle strength in athletes as
the vibration forces muscles to contract more. It was also likely to help improve balance.
"Whole body vibration offers an opportunity to improve bone strength, muscle strength
and balance -- three of the known risk factors for hip fractures in the elderly."
Osteoporosis-related fractures are most common in older women, particularly those with
other risk factors such as low body weight, a history of low calcium intake, and little or no
physical activity.
"This is a simple, low intensity alternative that is perfect for people who can't do more
strenuous physical activity," Dr Beck said.

Vibration Helps Regulate Blood Pressure

The blood pressure is
the pressure of the
blood within the
arteries. It is produced
primarily by the
contraction of the heart
muscle. It's
measurement is
recorded by two
numbers. The first
(systolic pressure) is
measured after the
heart contracts and is
highest. The second
(diastolic pressure) is
measured before the
heart contracts and
lowest. A blood pressure
cuff is used to measure
the pressure. Elevation
of blood pressure is
called "hypertension".

 Diastolic pressure (the lower reading) is the pressure remaining in the blood vessels
when the heart is at rest between beats and the blood vessels are relaxed.
Systolioc pressure (the higher reading) is the pressure at which blood can just pass the obstruction of
the cuff. Loosely speaking it is a measure of how hard the heart can pump.

 There are two types of cholesterol: “good” and “bad.” It’s important to understand the
difference, and to know the levels of “good” and “bad” cholesterol in your blood. Too
much of one type — or not enough of another — can put you at risk for coronary heart
disease, heart attack or stroke
 Cholesterol can’t dissolve in the blood. It has to be transported to and from the cells
by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as “bad”
cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as “good” cholesterol.
These two types of lipids, along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up
your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test
