4 F1a 4.4 Cleaning up grease stains Two pupils were given a sample of vinegar and a sample of sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate) solution. They investigated how the two substances compared in removing grease stains. Our report 1 We put vinegar into one bowl and sodium hydrogen carbonate solution into another bowl. We added water. 2 We put some grease-stained cloth into each bowl. 3 We left the bowls for 30 minutes and then dried out the cloth and saw what happened. Look at their report 1 Give one way they made their investigation fair. (Level 4) 2 Give two ways they could improve their investigation. (Level 5) 3 What should they observe to compare the two types of cleaning substance? (Level 5) One of the pupils found a bottle of sodium hydroxide in the laboratory with the following hazard warning symbol on it. 4 Why would it not have been a good idea to use this alkali instead of the sodium hydrogen carbonate? (Level 6) 5 Sodium hydoxide is used to clean drains. Suggest why this works and the safety precautions you would need to take when handling it.
