Dunlop Public School 1310 Pebble Road Ottawa, Ontario K1V 7R8 (p) 613.521.4611 (f) 613.521.4652 Principal: Cynthia Willman Chief Custodian: Alex Leduc Newsletter # 8 Office Administrator: Kim Sacca Office Assistant: Noreen King June 2017 Welcome to June! When I look back to the early days of September, I am very pleased at the work and progress our students have completed. I am truly fortunate to be able to see the growth in children as they work on consolidating their learning and experience success in their learning. This is a good time of year to recognize the efforts of your child's teachers in supporting your child in achieving and reaching their full potential. I know teachers work hard to meet the needs of the diverse group of learners in their classes and they always appreciate when their efforts are recognized. This has been a great year for me as the Principal of Dunlop. It has been a pleasure getting to know the students and the school community. It was a bit of a daunting task coming to a new school in the fall and having to learn about the school customs and traditions as well as the names of all the new to me students, staff and community members! I want to thank you all for your support throughout the year and I am already looking forward to September! I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer. Cynthia Willman ________________________________________________________________________________________ PLEASE HELP US TO KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE by not driving into the parking lot or bus drop off area before or after school. We need our staff to be supervising children before school; as a result we are counting on parents and drivers to respect our rule to stop on the street at the front of the school when dropping off children. All the staff here at Dunlop would like to give a great big thank you to our parents for a delicious lunch last Wednesday, June 7. We all enjoyed the wonderful treat and felt very spoiled! Thank you very much to our School council who ran a great barbeque on a very rainy evening! Students had a good time and were talking about the fun they had in the days following. We know a lot of hard work went into making everything go so smoothly. If you are in need of a backpack for your child for September 2017, please call us at school now and we can give you one per child, so you are ready to go for the first day of school. All school organization is tentative until October. Our enrolment for September is predicted to be about 150 and we are still expecting some new registrations. Please note that this will not be finalized until the end of September and that changes may still occur. We are experiencing some staffing changes for next year, some of which are outlined below, we are still in the staffing process so not all positions have been filled yet. We are saying goodbye to Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Buswell, who are both retiring. We wish them both well in this new chapter in their lives! Mr. Siderius will be moving to Vincent Massey Public School. We are sad to see him go, and hope he enjoys his new school. Mrs. Kirsten Whittle will be joining our Dunlop team as teacher of our grade 5/6 class. She will be on Maternity Leave for the 2017-2018 school year, so we will see her in September 2018. Mrs. Cooper will be moving to Bayshore Public School. We wish her the very best in her new school, and will miss her here. Mrs. Casey, who has been our English Kindergarten Prep teacher in the mornings, will join us full time next year as our grade 1/2 teacher. We are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Humphries, who is leaving us for Vimy Ridge School. Parents also save $5 on a daily parking permit at most Ontario provincial parks. Simply bring a coupon – found at Ontario.ca/funpass – to any participating attraction. Visit our website for more information about the Fun Pass program and to download the e-pass. th Curriculum and Ministry Documents for Parents - Multiple Languages The Ministry of Education has many curriculum (K-12) and other documents on its website that parents might be interested in. OSTA (Ottawa Student Transportation Authority) 2017-2018 Student Transportation Info: Route information will be available to parents as of August 20, 2017via the online Parent Web Portal. Schools may have access to some routes prior to this date, through the school web portal. Student Transportation Information can also be found using the “Stop Finder” located on the main page of our website, which will link to the “BusPlanner - Parent Portal”. The parent must enter the student's last name, birthdate, school and grade in order to access route and stop information. The “Stop Finder”feature returns bus stop and route information for eligible students who are assignedto regular yellow school bus or small school purpose vehicle service, or for eligible grade 7 and 8 students who are assigned to OC Transpo Service. OC Transpo route schedules will also be made available through the OSTA website or can be found directly through the OC Transpo website at www.octranspo.com. More information on routes to specific schools can be obtained on OC Transpo's Quick Planner under High Schools and Middle Schools. Small School Purpose Vehicles The driver responsible for the route will contact each family directly prior to the first day of school. Students with Special Needs – Requests for Accessible Transportation Each student requiring special accommodation for transportation should have a “Request for Accessible Transportation” form completed by their parents, signed by the Principal and forwarded to the Spec Ed department. The Spec Ed department will then send the form to OSTA with any appropriate comments that would help us meet the student's individual needs. Any requests for short- or long-term accommodation for medical conditions also require the Request for Accessible Transportation Form “signed by the parents and the principal, and then forwarded to the Superintendent for approval. A medical note or certificate indicating what needs are being accommodated is required. Please note that accommodation of needs for transportation should also be reflected at the school. For example, if a student cannot walk x number of meters to school, then should the student be running around in gym, at recess, or during extra-curricular activities? Transportation for students in a joint custody arrangement with two homes OSTA has developed a new policy & procedure to deliver transportation services to students in a joint custody arrangement and having two homes. An application process and other requirements need to be met for parents to receive this service, and the homes or daycares in question must meet all other eligibility requirements. The deadline for new applications or changes to existing applications for September start up transportation was June 1. Renewals of current schedule calendars (no other changes)are due June 30. All other applications will be reviewed after September 15, and prior to October 1. More information can be found on our website: http://www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/policiesprocedures/variable-transportation-for-students-in-a-joint-custody-arrangement-and-having-two-homescopy/ Kindergarten Staggered Entry and ID School bus routes are planned according to the number of registered students in the data system from May to July 2017. We continue to make changes in transportation throughout school start up. Routes are driven as planned as of the first day of school September 2017 and drivers will stop at each stop, regardless of whether KG students are beginning that day or whether they are beginning later on in the week. Please remind parents of new and returningKG students that they MUSTmake arrangements to have the SAME person meet their child at their stop every afternoon. Parents may identify one alternate person only. Failure to meet their child mayresult in termination of transportation services and/ortheir child being dropped off at the nearest police station. ****We have noticed that parents are submitting long lists of “alternate responsible people” to meet their children. OSTA will only accept 2 namesand the driver will only release the child to 1 of 2 people on file **** OSTA will be providing bright yellow plastic tags that should be attached to any KG student's back pack (preferably on the lower left side). These will assist the drivers in making sure a responsible person designated by the parent, or the parent, is at the stop to collect the student at their drop off point, per policy. We kindly request that teachers remove the plastic tags from any students NOT in kindergarten.
