Nebraska City – Four players remain in the Championship Bracket of The 6th Nebraska Senior Match
Play Championship after two rounds of match play on Monday at ArborLinks.
The No. 1 seed, Carl Johnson of Omaha, who fired a 1-under 71 on Sunday to claim Stroke Play Qualifying Medalist Honors, fell in the Round of 16 to 2013 Champion Chris Mangan of Omaha, 3 and 2.
Mangan then advanced to the Semifinals with a 1 up win over Lincoln’s Scott Howerter, the 1984 Nebraska Match Play Champion.
Mangan will face Omaha’s Rick Dusek, who caught fire to roll through his first two matches, winning 6
and 5 over Omaha’s Cliff Grosskopf in the Round of 16, and 4 and 3 over Omaha’s Pete Godwin in the
Quarterfinals.
In the other semifinal, the Lincoln’s Michael Peterson will face 2015 Nebraska Senior Amateur Champion Jay Muller of Bennington. Peterson garnered two 2 and 1 wins, in the Round of 16 over No. 2 Seed
and ArborLinks member Steve Redlin, and in the Quarterfinals over 70-year-old Jack Diesing Jr. of
Omaha. Muller battled against Omaha’s Michael Root, a 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier, in his
opening match, pulling out a win in 19 holes. Muller then faced Callaway’s Gene Schneringer, who upset
No. 3 Seed John Sajevic of Fremont in the first round. Muller wasted no time though, cruising to a 5 and
4 win.
In the President’s Flight, Lincoln’s Randy Markus advanced to the final Tuesday afternoon, while Mike
Krumland of Columbus, a 3-time Senior Match Play Champion, will face Omaha’s Gary Bowen in the
other semifinal Tuesday morning. The winner will face Markus in the final.
In the Sam Reynold’s Flight, Superior’s Ronald Thayer will take on Elkhorn’s Steve Ritzman in the final
at 1:20 p.m.
In the Bob Astleford Net Flight, Bob Nowaczyk of Omaha is set to face Lincoln’s Bert Newell in the final
at 9 a.m.
Semifinals begin at 8:30 a.m., with Finals to follow in the afternoon. Updated brackets are available on
