Stone, brick, tile and concrete contain silica, and produce silica dust known as Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). RCS is also known as respirable -quartz, cristobalite, or ‘free silica’. Crystalline silica concentrations in common materials plastic composites up to 90% sandstone, gritstone, quartzite, flint concrete, mortar more than 70% shale 40% to 60% china stone up to 50% tile 30 to 45% slate up to 40% granite up to 30% brick up to 30% ironstone up to 15% basalt, dolerite up to 5% 25% to 70% The risks Inhaling RCS can lead to silicosis. Silicosis is a serious and irreversible lung disease that causes permanent disablement and early death, and it is made worse by smoking. All RCS is hazardous. ‘Respirable’ means that the dust is invisibly fine, and gets deep into the lungs. Action You need to find out how much silica your workers are being exposed to. If you are unsure, you need to arrange for exposure measurements. Then you need to minimise the amount of RCS being breathed-in by reducing the amount of airborne dust. Look carefully at the control measures that can be used, some are more cost effective and practical for each situation than others. You need to keep all controls in good working order. This means mechanical controls (eg extraction, respirator), administrative controls (eg supervision, health surveillance) and operator behaviour (following instructions). Show that control is being sustained – keep good records. Stress Stress, do you understand what this is, how it can affect people and how you sweating, loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating. Many of life’s demands can cause stress, particularly work, relationships and money problems, and when people feel stressed, it can get in the way of sorting out these demands, or can even affect everything they do. Stress is becoming more and more apparent in the workplace due to high demands and/or expectations of people and their job roles which eventually could affect how people feel, think or behave. Recognising stress can sometimes be difficult but you may be able to notice a change in your people with perhaps a loss of concentration, becoming irritable or displaying angry actions or acting unreasonably. Stress is not an illness itself, but it can cause serious illness if it is not addressed so it is important to recognise the symptoms of stress early. Recognising the signs and symptoms of stress will help you understand and hopefully help the individual. We are holding a breakfast training session on ‘Stress in the Workplace’ to help you understand the importance of recognising Stress and how you can help your employees.
