How is TopCoat different? Our coating is water based, is safe for the environment, and is considered a “green” product. Unlike other solvent based coatings, ours is easy to apply and cleans up with soap and water. How safe is TopCoat? TopCoat has no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and when tested for heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and other compounds that are known to cause cancer the results were non-measurable by current testing methods. Our water based line of IRR colorants aka “TopCoat Cool Touch Colorants” contains zero VOCs. Does TopCoat clear reduce surface temperature? No, the heat reduction properties are contained in the TopCoat Cool Touch Colorants, which are easily blended into the TopCoat clear. Do I need a contractor to apply TopCoat? While we recommend a certified playground contractor to do any repairs to your playground, typically any maintenance crew should easily be able to apply the material. How long does it take to dry? Depending on ambient temperatures and other weather factors, drying can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes or up to 12 hours. What is the lowest Temperature we can apply TopCoat? While we have heard of application temperatures as low as 50 degrees F, we strongly recommend you apply this at 60 degrees F and higher. Can I apply TopCoat with a roller? Yes, The TopCoat Clear is easily applied with either a roller or an airless sprayer. When you are applying the TopCoat with Color, it is strongly recommended you only use an airless sprayer for a more uniform looking color. However, for smaller areas of under 400 sq ft the TopCoat Color can be applied with a roller. Will household cleaners hurt TopCoat? No, if mixed and applied in accordance to the manufactures guidelines, these types of cleaners will not damageTopCoat. I want to completely seal my indoor surface so when our children get sick or have an accident it stays on top for easier cleaning. Can TopCoat seal the surface? Yes. If applied heavy enough you can significantly reduce the porosity. Will it seal outdoor surfacing? Depending on how heavy you apply the coating. Your installation crew will be responsible for the application rate and amounts of coating applied to a given area. Will it affect the Head Impact of the surfacing? When applied as directed the Head Impact of your surface should not be affected. TopCoat will NOT make a bad surface pass the Head Impact Criteria, if you have doubts about the fall height, then it should be tested by a professional inspector or agency. How does TopCoat extend the life of the surfacing? TopCoat is designed to add a protective layer of coating, stopping the granulation of the wear layer of the surface. By stopping the granulation and disintegration of the wear layer you can easily get a few more years out of your surfacing. TopCoat will not or was not designed to stop the breakdown of the base rubber layer of the surfacing, just the top layer. What is the maximum size or depth of cracks / damaged tiles that can be effectively repaired with the PIP Patch Kit? Our patch kits are designed for small areas. If extensive patching is needed you should contact a Certified Playground Contractor. What is the most effective IRR pigment for reducing heat? The lighter colors will always be cooler even in non IRR pigment What is the specific temperature gradient reduction for each IRR pigment? The temperature chart in our literature provides the basic information but we need to make sure to inform the customer that the differences stated are of the same colors in non IRR and IRR pigments on like surfaces. The temperature swings on rubber are a different story as rubber surfaces actually absorb heat and our coating greatly diminishes this effect. What is the benefit of stressing the fact we have no natural rubber latex? It is important as 5% of the population is allergic to natural latex and our main competitor sells a natural latex or liquid rubber product. How long do you need to wait after the primer is applied before you can apply the 1st coat of TopCoat? When the primer is dry to the touch and there is no transfer of material. What is the drying time between applications of TopCoat? When the coating is dry to the touch and there is no transfer of material. How long should people stay off the surface once the application has been completed? The surface should not be used for at least 24 hours.
