Physiological aspects of sports performance. The different energy systems used by the body in undertaking physical work. The influence of physiological systems in limiting physical performance. The influence of diet and nutrition on energy metabolism. The effects of environmental conditions on physical performance. The role and function of ergogenic aids in enhancing physical performance The difference between components of physical performance such as speed, strength, power, agility. The principles of training and their application to developing physical performance Short and long term physical adaptations to training. Plan and deliver effective warm-ups and cooldowns in the context of pre and post performance. Be capable of delivering a coaching session in which the aims and outcomes focus on developing one aspect of physical performance. Social psychological aspects of sports coaching The effects of stress, anxiety and arousal on sports performance and the role of techniques designed to regulate the impact of such stressors. The function of effective goal setting as a means of enhancing motivation and performance. The influence of motivation on sports performance and how motivation can be enhanced through a variety of techniques and exercises. The role of confidence and self-efficacy in relationship to performance. Theories of leadership, group dynamics and cohesion and the role of the sports coach in developing effective and efficient teams. Analysis of Sports Performance The knowledge of systems (qualitative and quantitative) that enable sports performance to be analysed from a technical, tactical and strategic perspective. An understanding of how to apply forms of analysis to sports performance and draw accurate conclusions that demonstrate relevance to the sports coaching process The knowledge of means to profile individual performers to assess their strengths and weaknesses as performers. The capability to plan, deliver and assess a coaching session that has been developed to improve an aspect of performance which has been identified through applying a form of performance analysis. Biomechanical and Movement Analysis Functional skeletal and muscular anatomy. The theories and Laws of physical force, motion and momentum that can be applied to sports performance. Techniques used in the kinesiological and kinematic modelling of sports performance. An understanding of how to apply biomechanical principles of movement to the coaching process. The capability to apply the knowledge and understanding derived from a form of biomechanical modelling to observe and analyse performance and use the findings to plan and deliver a coaching session. Management and Development of Coaching The sports industry in the UK and the position of coaching within this industry. The key policy and strategic documents that apply to the development of coaching as a professionally regulated vocation. The relationship between sports coaching and the wider context of sports development in the UK. Theoretical and conceptual forms of analysis that can help to describe and explain the role of sports coaching within a modern society. The historical development of sports coaching within the UK.
