SC Student Council Garners Board Positions
Five SC Student Council members attended the 30th
Annual State Convention of the SD Student Council Association (SDSCA) held in Rapid City on April
9-11. The SDSCA Convention included 916 students and advisors from 62 high schools across the
state. The SDSCA, which is co-sponsored by the
SD High School Activities Association, offers an
opportunity for student council members to exercise and enhance their leadership skills. Focusing
on the theme “Lead Us West”, the SDSCA Convention utilized a combination of breakout sessions and large group instructional presentations by their
guest speaker and workshop presenters, which were focused on different aspects of leadership.
The convention featured a state-wide community service project. Students made over 60 fleece blankets
that will be given to women/children shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes to aid those who need some
help.
The Convention activities included the annual business meeting of the SDSCA and the election of the Association’s 2017-2018 state officers, as well as the election of the officers for each of the Association’s
seven regions.
Elected to 2016-2017 SDSCA offices from SC were: Will Spangenberg/State Student Council Board Sergeant-at-Arms/Parliamentarian; Austin Hand Capitol Region Board Sergeant at Arms/Parliamentarian; and
Conner Kroll Capitol Region Student Council Board as the Stanley County school representative. Will
Spangenberg will attend an all-expenses paid trip to Indianapolis this summer for training as part of the
state board.
Perhaps the most inspirational moment during the State Convention occurred as part of the Closing General Session when the student councils presented their checks for money raised as part of the SDSCA
Statewide Spring "Children’s Miracle Network" project. By tradition the SDSCA spring fundraising project
is focused on the theme of "Kids Helping Other Kids". Student Councils giving money to a project such as
Children’s Miracle Network, epitomizes the "Kids Helping Other Kids" philosophy. The Stanley County
Student Council was able to donate $400.00 for this cause. The total raised this year at the high school
level was $38,200!
The students and advisors from Stanley County High School that attended the SDSCA State Convention
were: Austin Hand, Damon Hoftiezer, Will Spangenberg, Carson Wyly, and Conner Kroll. They were
accompanied by Mr. Ellwanger and Mrs. Swanson.
We wish to congratulate our fine young men not only on their new positions, but also on their exemplary
behavior during the convention. Both advisors are extremely proud of how the students conducted themselves!

Kindergarten Examines Owl Pellets
Miss Jacobsen’s class did some research on owls after reading the book
Owls in the Family. While researching,
they came across the fact that owls
regurgitate something called an owl
pellet. The students were very interested in this so Mr. Latham, from the
high school, had some extras that he
brought over to them. Both Kindergarten classes came together and opened
up one of the pellets and examined
what was inside. The students passed
around the different bones and tried to match up the bones to
figure out what kind of animal it came from. We found out that
the pellet we opened up had 3 skulls of rodents and over 100
other bones inside!

SC Student Council Serves
The SC student Council
served as wait staff for the
fundraiser ‘Night on the
Town” at the newly remodeled Community
Youth Involved Center in
Fort Pierre. Students served a six
course meal, helped
prepare dishes, and
then did mountains
of dish washing.
Members gained a new appreciation for the hard work
involved in working in a food service occupation. They
would like to extend a special thank you to the parents
who helped in the kitchen!
