iMovie Notes iMovie Window – There are five important parts to the iMovie window. Viewer Event Library Event Browser Media Tools Project Window 1 3 2 4 5 i-Movie Directions – Part 1 New Project 1. File menu > New Project In the New Project window you need to: o Name your Project - Practice o Choose the aspect ratio – 16:9 o Choose the theme – none Download Pictures 1. Create a new folder in your documents folder. Name it Practice Pics. 2. Go to media library on the 8th grade technology webpage. 3. Click on iMovie pic 1 and download. 4. When the picture opens up in a new window, control click on the picture and choose save as. Save it into the new folder we created. 5. Repeat this process for pictures 2-5. Insert Pictures 1. Open the folder containing the pictures you saved from the Internet. 2. Drag and drop each of the 5 pictures into the project window. 3. The pictures will now be there to edit. i-Movie Directions – Part 2 The gear icon – clicking this icon will give us the different options available to the user. Batch – formatting multiple things at once. Insert Title Slide 1. Click on “T” icon on the media tools bar. 2. Choose the “centered” title style. 3. Drag and drop the title slide into the project window a. You can drop it in front of the first picture. b. You can drop it on top of the first picture. 4. Type you text by clicking on the textbox in the viewer window. Insert Transitions – used to make smooth transitions from picture to picture or video clip to video clip 1. Click on the transitions icon on the media tools bar. 2. Choose the “cross zoom” style transition. 3. Drag and drop the transition between each picture. Hint: If you will only use one transition you can quickly apply that transition throughout the whole video. Directions: File Menu > Project themes > Click on “Automatically add” and choose the transition style you want. Insert Music 1. 2. 3. 4. Click on the eighth note icon on the media tool bar. Click on i-Life Sound Effects folder. Choose “Acoustic Sunrise” Drag and drop the music into the project window. a. If you drop the music when the whole project window is highlighted green the music will start at the beginning. b. You can drop the music at a specific point on a picture. The music will then start at that time in the video. 5. The music track will be a green bar that wraps around the clips in the project window. 6. Trim the clip by placing your cursor at the beginning or end of the music clip, clicking and moving your mouse to the left or right. Set Time for Clips 1. Choose the first clip by clicking on it with your cursor. 2. Click on the small gear icon that appears on the clip. 3. Choose clip adjustment 4. Change the duration to 5 seconds. Hint: If you want to change multiple pictures duration follow these directions: File Menu > Project Properties > Timing icon > Move the photo duration slider to 5 seconds > click on “applies to all photos > click on ok. i-Movie Directions – Part 3 Ken Burns Effect – adds motion to a still image. 1. Click on the image you want to edit. 2. Click on the gear icon that appears at the bottom left corner of the image. Choose Cropping, Ken Burns, and Rotation. 3. In the viewer window the controls to edit the Ken Burns effect appear. 4. The green rectangle represents the starting position. The red rectangle will represent the finishing position. 5. You can control how large each rectangle is by clicking on the corner of it and dragging to make it larger or smaller. 6. Adjust the position of the start and finish rectangles to control the movement. When finished, click done. 7. We will add specific movement to each picture. a. Pic 1 – Start on the left and finish on the right. b. Pic 2 – Start wide and finish zoomed into the center. c. Pic 3 – Start on the right and finish left d. Pic 4 – Start zoomed in and finish wide. e. Pic 5 – Start at the top left corner and finish at the bottom right corner. Video Effect – adds premade effects to the image or video. 1. 2. 3. 4. Click on the clip you want to add a video effect to. Click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the clip. Choose clip adjustments. Then clip on the video effects button. Choose the dream effect for all the images. Chapter Markers – used to group different portions of your video. 1. In the top right corner of the project window click on the red rectangle with an arrow in it. 2. To place a chapter marker in your project drag and drop it in the correct location. 3. Add a chapter marker in between each clip in your project. Share – exports you project into a format that can be viewed as a movie by different video players. (Quicktime or iTunes) 1. Click on the Share menu and choose “Export Movie.” An Export movie window will appear. 2. Title the movie “Bubbles Lab”. 3. Choose the location where it will be saved. Go to your documents. Click on the New Folder button and name the folder “First iMovie Project”. 4. Choose the “mobile” export size. The larger the export size, the longer it takes to export it. 5. Click on export. iMovie Directions – Part 4 Import Video – add new movies to your event library. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. File menu > Import > Movie Find the Lego Indiana Jones Video I put into your public drop box. Select create a new event. Name it “Lego Indiana Jones.” Click Import. The file will import and appear in your event library. New Project 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Add a new project File menu > New Project Title it “Lego Jones” Do NOT add transitions or a theme. Click ok. Add video to the project 1. 2. 3. 4. Click on the Lego Indiana Jones event in the event library. It will then appear in the event browser. Select the whole video by double clicking on it in the event browser. Drag and drop the whole movie from the event browser to the project window. Split – cuts the video into sections. 1. Control click on the spot where you will add the split. Choose split on the menu that appears. 2. Split the clip at the scene where Lego Jones places a check mark next to the word idol. 3. Split the clip as the scene fades from the truck driving in the desert to the world map scene. 4. Split the clip before it shows the movie scene. Delete clips 1. Click on the clip you want to delete, then hit the delete key. 2. Delete the last section of the video we created after making the final split. Chapters – divides your split clips into sections 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Control click before the first clip. Choose chapter marker from the menu. A chapter marker will appear in red above the clip. Click in the red box and title the chapter “The Idol”. Control click on the first split we made in the video. Add a chapter marker and name it “The Ark”. Control click on the second split we made in the video. Add a chapter marker and name it “The Skull”. iMovie Directions – Part 5 Transitions 1. Drag and drop a transition into the gap where we split the clips. Title 1. Add credits at the end of the video 2. Type: Edited by yourname Audio editing 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Control click on the first clip in the Project window. Choose detach audio from the menu. The audio from the clip will appear below it in a green rectangle. Click on the audio and hit delete. Get the mp3 from your drop box folder and drag it into your documents folder. To insert audio we can also drag and drop the mp3 directly into the project window. Drag and drop the mp3 into the project window. It should start at the beginning and end where we split the first clip. 7. Trim the audio clip to the correct size by clicking at the end of the audio clip and dragging to shorten it. 8. Double click on the audio. In the inspector window that appears choose Audio. 9. We will add a manual fade in and manual fade out to audio clip to give it a finished sound. Click on manual below fade in and fade out and set the time slider to 2 seconds on both.
