Monotype Unicode TrueType font for Mac OS X Quick Reference

7. Font Naming Issues and Vertical Writing
Under font menu of Mac OS 9 applications, Monotype Chinese fonts can be identified as a letter M (or C) follow
,
). Adobe Type Reunion or Adobe Illustrator users are also
by the Chinese name of the font (e.g.
familiar with the PostScript name of the Monotype Chinese font (MSung-Light, MHei-Bold).
Under Mac OS X, it is not uncommon that different application retrieve font name from different part of the font.
Because of the confusion, we have summarised how the font names are displayed by a few popular Mac OS X
applications below:

2. Fonts and Character Set
Big 5 versions of Monotype Traditional Chinese fonts support Big5 character set with 471 Monotype Hong Kong
characters (user-defined characters). As a result of adopting Unicode, Mac OS X opens up a much wider code
range. The Unicode version of Monotype TrueType font now directly supports Hong Kong Supplementary
Character Set (HKSCS). Encoding compatibility is ISO10646 v.2 and character count ranges from 1,317 to
4,818 user-defined characters. Please refer to the table at appendix A on character counts of HKSCS fulfilment.

This guide serves as a quick reference to different issues in using this Monotype Unicode TrueType font
product under Mac OS X. You are advised to read the section 2, 3 and the compatibility sections of this guide.
All Simplified Chinese Big5 (GB5) fonts
In addition to Traditional Chinese, Monotype continue to support Simplified Chinese writings on 20 Unicode
fonts. The behaviour is similar to the “GB5” versions of the Big5 encoded fonts, where text entered in Traditional
Chinese input methods can be displayed and printed in Simplified Chinese form.
Please note that, although the fonts has already included HKSCS characters, your Input Methods and/or
applications might not be able to utilise them. Different kinds of compatibility problems are discussed in more
details in Section 5 and 6.
Installations
Mac OS X is a multi-user operating system. Before you start, you must ensure that you have the proper access
right. And depends on whether you want the fonts to be available globally (to all users) or specific to a user,
there are at least two locations where fonts can be installed.
• Globally Available
The fonts are installed by copying the data from
the CD to the following directory:
/Library/Fonts
• Specifically Available
The fonts are installed by copying the data from
the CD to the following directory:
~/Library/Fonts
where ~ is the home directory of the user.
________________
Note: The Monotype fonts are licensed on a per workstation basis, you can install as many copies as you like within one workstation
3. Input Methods
To Use Monotype Text Converter
Monotype Input Methods (IME) supports Cangjie and Quick input. Both of them support HKSCS and are
ISO10646 V.2 encoding compatible. Monotype IME is implemented as a plug-in to the standard Mac OS Input
Methods.
Double-click to run the converter. Click Open on the dialog box and you’ll be asked to choose a source file:
Installations
Before installation of Monotype IME, you should make sure that the base input method for Traditional Chinese
has been activated. Please refer to Mac OS X help for activation of Traditional Chinese script and input
methods.
Monotype IME is implemented as a plug-in to the
standard system input methods. Contrary to fonts,
Monotype IME can only be installed for a specific user.
To make Monotype IME available to more than one user,
each user must install a separate copy of the Monotype
IME.
After choosing a source file, you’ll be prompted to choose a target file name. The Unicode text file will have a
.utxt extension.
The Monotype IME are installed by copying the plug-in
from the CD to the following directory:
~/Library/ChineseInputMethodPlug-in
where ~ is the home directory of the user.
5. Compatibility Issues - Applications
After installing the plug-in, the input methods will be available on the next log-in.
Note: The Monotype IME is licensed on a per workstation basis, you can install as many copies as you like within one workstation
To Activate the IME
To activate Monotype IME, you should choose
from the Input Method Menu as shown below.
You should also choose a font that has HKSCS
implementation (e.g. MSung-Light-HKSCS-U). To
choose an IME font, you should select Preference
from the IME menu and choose the font accordingly.
Mac OS X was designed with compatibility supports to at least three different kinds of applications: Classic,
Carbon, Cocoa. Unfortunately, behaviour of extended character set such as HKSCS is quite different from
application type to application type. This is because of the “Round Trip Conversion Integrity” requirement of
ATSUI applications and Input Methods. The following table summarise character set support of different
application types as a result of “Round Trip Conversion Integrity”.

Monotype Big5 TrueType font is Big5 encoded with 471 Monotype user-defined characters. The Monotype

Installations
The Monotype Text Converter is installed by copying the application folder from the CD to your hard drive.
