MARIA MONTESSORI • • • • • Maria Tecla Artemesia Montessori Born August 31, 1870 Died May 6, 1952 Chiaravelle, Italy University of Rome STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT Absorbent Mind (0-3 Years) The child learns from his enviornment by seeing and hearing things from their sorroundings. It is suggested to have a suitable enviornment for the child so they can have a good impression on life at an early stage. CONSCIOUS ABSORBENT MIND (3-6 YEARS) The child becomes aware of the adult influence. Their hands become a great learning tool and should start social development during these ages. The child also start to want the company of other children and want to be separated from the mother for short periods of time. LATER CHILDHOOD (6-12 YEARS) The child starts to become self conscious and is aware of the difference between right and wrong. They start start to use all five senses to learn. PUBERTY (6-12 YEARS) Puberty means the end of childhood and physical changes in the child become obvious, and also start to become sensitive to their self. At this change the child needs complete emotional support from the parents. ADOLESCENCE (12-18 YEARS) The child is converting into adulthood and have a desire to explore the world. This is marked with rebellion, doubt, attitude, and hesitation. MONTESSORI AND PIAGET Maria Montessori and Jean Piaget both proposed children develop in sequence. However they disagreed on timing. Piaget believed children did not reach their concrete operational stage until the age of seven Montessori believed children should start learning how to use the senses at a very young age.
