SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS
The following is a brief summary of the revised or new paragraphs in the Standards for Plumbing
Supply Fittings (ASME A112.18.1-2011 / CSA B125.1-11), Backflow Prevention Devices for
Hand-Held Showers (ASSE 1014-2005), and Automatic Compensating Valves for Individual
Showers and Tub/Shower Combinations (ASSE 1016-2011 / ASME A112.1016-2011 / CSA
B125.16-11), which have a future Effective Date of 12/31/2013 and the action that may be
required to determine compliance.

Cross-flow
Design specifications and a test procedure were added for flow-control devices,
and faucets or fittings that have integral flow-control devices.
Action Required: Product designs must be reviewed for compliance. Faucets or
fittings that have integral flow-control devices downstream of the primary shut-off
valves that completely shut off the flow of water or that have devices upstream of
the primary shut-off valves that might allow cross-flow will require testing.

Corrosion (all substrates and coatings)
The Test Methods have been changed from ASTM B 456, ASTM G 85, and
ASTM B 287 to ASTM G 85, ASTM B 117, ASTM B 368, and ASTM B 380.
Action Required: Testing will be required for product with coatings, unless they
were tested in accordance with one of the four current test methods.

Adhesion - Electrodeposited and PVD coatings on plastics
The thermal cycling test procedure was changed.
Action Required: Electrodeposited and PVD coatings on plastics will require
testing in accordance with the new procedure.

Pressure and Temperature – Static and dynamic seals
A leakage test for seals of plumbing supply fittings and accessories was added.
Action Required: Products will require testing.

Hose Assemblies
A torque/leakage test was added for hose assemblies.
Action Required: Products with hose assemblies will require testing.

Ball Joints
A leakage test was added for ball joints in shower heads, body sprays, and handheld shower assemblies.
Action Required: Shower head, body spray and hand-held shower assemblies
with ball joints will require testing.

Diverters
A leakage test was added for diverters.
Action Required: Products with diverters will require testing.

Aerators and other end point devices
A pressure/temperature test was added for aerators and other end point devices
Action Required: Aerators and other end point devices will require testing.

Flow Rate
A new requirement was added to test the flow rate after life cycle testing, in
addition to before life cycle testing.

The minimum and maximum flow rates were revised or added for bath fittings,
bidets, high-efficiency fittings, commercial pre-rinse spray valves, and shower
heads.
Action Required: Previous Flow Rate test results will be reviewed for compliance.

Life Cycle
The test procedure was revised for all products: The hot water temperature was
changed from 140 F to 150 F; Cold water was changed from ambient to 50 F; A
flow rate of 15 L/min minimum was added as a parameter; Hot and cold
temperature cycles were changed to specify alternating every 1000 cycles; Cycle
sequence was changed for single-control mixing valves. Life cycle testing was
added for bidet fittings, body spray, hand shower or shower head adjusting
mechanisms, body spray or shower head ball joints, side spray assembly,
electronic fittings, and hoses. Post life cycle test requirements were revised.
Action Required: Products will require testing.

Thread Torque Strength
The test procedure was revised to include pressure and burst tests for threaded
connections at two (2) different torques.
Action Required: Products with threaded supply connections will require testing.

Resistance to Use Loading - Operating Controls
New requirements were added to test for resistance to use on controls other than
wall-mounted bath or shower.
Action Required: Products other than wall-mounted bath or shower fittings will
require testing.

Maintenance of installed position
This was a new test added for hand-held showers with a lug or other device for
hanging the hand-held shower.
Action Required: Hand-held showers with a lug or other hanging device will
require testing.

Swing Spout Strength
The test method was revised to specify a 14 lb weight requirement, rather than a
specified bending moment.
Action Required: Previous test results will be reviewed for compliance. Products
that were tested using less than a 14 lb weight will require testing.

Backflow Prevention
The backflow prevention tests are now required to be performed both before and
after the life cycle test, rather than just before.

A new requirement has been added that bath and shower mixing valves must
have their temperature control settings identified.

reviewed for compliance.

General Subject and Comment
Scope
ASSE 1016-96 was divided into multiple Standards. The scope of ASSE 1016
was revised to only cover automatic compensating valves for Showers and
Tub/Shower combinations.
Action Required: Product usage must be reviewed to determine if it still falls
under the scope of ASSE 1016. Automatic compensating valves not covered
under ASSE 1016 will require evaluation in accordance with the applicable
Standard.
General Requirements
Reference Standard ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 was updated to the 2011
version.
Action Required: Products will require evaluation for compliance with ASME
A112.18.1/CSA B125.1.
Accessible Design
New requirements have been added for the design of operating controls for
use in Accessible Design.
Action Required: Products intended for accessible design will require review
for compliance.
Temperature
A maximum outlet temperature of 120 F has been specified.
Action Required: Products must be reviewed to determine if the temperature
setting is limited to 120 F.
Working Pressure Test
Test parameters have been revised to require testing at four (4) temperature
and pressure combinations.
Action Required: Products will require testing.
Maximum Operating Torque or Force Adjustment Test
Test parameters have been revised to require testing at four (4) temperature
and pressure combinations.
Action Required: Products will require testing.
Life Cycle Tests
The Life Cycle procedure has been changed.
Action Required: Products will require testing.
Maximum Torque or Operating Force
A requirement has been added to re-test the device after life cycle testing.

Pressure and Temperature Variation Test Procedure
The procedures were changed to include an additional increase in hot water
pressure.

Water Supply Failure Test – All Types
The previous testing only required testing for cold water failure. A new
requirement has been added to test hot water failure as well.

This is a new requirement that has been added.
