crosses and recent
memorial plaques.
Total area of the
historical and
natural museum of
Pustozersk – 20 000
hectares.
In 1989 Naryan-Mar
students of local lore
put up a memorial and

Pustozersk prisoners –
Protopope Avvakum,
priest Lazar, deacon
Fedor, and monk
Epiphany (author A.

A monument to Pustozersk
(author – V.M. Kibirev).
State nature reserve “Nenetsky”
The state nature reserve was founded in 1997.
Tundra, presented by reindeer pastures with various mosses and
grasses.
There are over 60 different bird species.
The territory of «Nenetsky» has great importance in the studies of
birds migration.
In the shallows of the Pechora Bay there are omul, salmon,
inconnu, and Pacific herring.
On the territory of the nature reserve there are species of plants,
such as roseroot, mountain avens, and others.
As for rare mammals from the Red Data Book, new rookeries of
Atlantic walruses have been noted of Dolgy and Matveyev
Islands; several polar bears come to the protected territory each
year.
The Pechora sea is a permanent habitat of various sea mammals
(phoca, bearced seal) and an area of seasonal visits for
cetaceans (while whales)
To the Great Gate Canyon through the
Stone City
The Great Gate Canyon is a unique natural landscape of
the Nenets Autonomous District which is located 40km from Indiga
settlement and has an area of 212 hectares.
For about 3 km the river
valley has vertical basalt
walls of the Late
Devonian Period that
reach 80 meters in some
places.
In the basalts of the canyon and alluvial deposits of the
river there are numerous inclusions of agates, amethysts,
and other valuable rocks.
The river, which is 2530 m. wide inside the
canyon, goes through
a chain of stony
rapids.
Inside the canyon there are rosehip and currant,
aspen, birch, mountain-ash and fir — plants that
are not typical for this region.
Sandstone remnants of amazing shapes look like ancient
castles and towers with sparkling snow-white quartz sand
lying between them. To reach some of the "castles", you
will have to go down deep narrow canyons, no wider than 10
meters and sometimes up to 20 meters deep.
The natural feature “Pymva-Shor”
This projected natural feature is located in Bolshezemelskaya
Tundra, in the middle reaches of river Adz’va, between
streams Pymva-Shor and Der-Shor, 65 km to the north-east
of the settlement of Kharuta.
Its main treasures are unique mineral thermal
springs and a Paleolithic cave.

There are 8 mineral thermal springs
in Pymva-Shor.
Vaigach – sacred land
The Nenets people called the deserted island Hebidya
Ya, that means “the Saint Land”. According to their
legends their gods’ abode was located here. Deerherders and hunters annually visited the island to make
sacrifices to the mighty deities
and to pray for
protection from
enemies and
good luck in
hunting.
Vaygach Island is separated
from the Yugorsky Peninsula
in the mainland by the
Yugorsky Strait and from
Novaya Zemlya by the
Kara Strait.
Its area is 3,383 square
kilometres (1,306 sq mi)
Length: ~100 km
Width: up to 45 km
Average temperatures: −20°С
(February), +5°С (June)
Highest point: 170 m
The most esteemed gods were
Vesako (“the Old Man”) and
Hodako (“the Old Woman”).
Vesako ‘lived’ in the southern
part of Vaigach on the
Dyakonova Cape.
The idol of Vesako was a high
wooden figure with seven
faces, accompanied by the
retinue of 400 smaller wooden
idols depicting the men,
women and children, and also
about 20 stone statues.
Today Vaigach is a natural reserve and there are various historicalcultural monuments and the settlement Varnek (about 40
residents). Nenets are engaged in reindeer breeding, crafts, there
is a small souvenir-fur shop on the island.
In 2007, the World Wide
Fund for Nature (WWF) and
the Russian government
have approved a nature
reserve on Vaygach island.
The island's surrounding
seas are home to many
marine mammals such as
walruses, seals and
endangered whales.
