STEPS TO FIND A THERAPIST IN PRIVATE PRACTICE

Knowing when to seek therapy is a sign that you are listening to yourself and are healthy enough to seek
care when you need it. Counseling is a confidential interaction with the goal of receiving support and/or
engendering personal change – attitudinal, behavioral, emotional. The therapist listens, helps you take
stock of your situation, brainstorms with you for helpful changes to thoughts and behaviors, and provides
support and encouragement. It is most effective when you remain as open and honest about yourself and
your situation. Remember, you are always ultimately responsible for your own growth.
I.
Think about why you are seeking therapy. Make a list of what you want to accomplish. This will help
you have clarity, and ease communicating your goals to potential therapists.
II. Write out a list of questions to screen potential therapists. Here are some suggestions:
 Briefly state your goals and ask the therapist if that is something they feel comfortable working
with, and if they can help you reach your goals.
 Ask about their approach to therapy (eg, cognitive behavioral, analytic, feminist, relational, etc.)
and what this looks like in a typical session.
 Ask about their educational background and if they are licensed (eg, licensed psychologist, licensed
professional counselor, licensed independent social worker, etc.).
 Ask about their fee per session, policies about payment, what insurance they take, and any policies
about taking insurance.
III. Identify your top 3-5 choices off the Macalester referral list, or from your insurance provider list. Think
about gender, ethnicity, culture, location, and specialty areas if they are important to you.
IV. Contact your top choices. See sample script on next page.
V. Make an appointment to meet with at least one therapist. Therapists are human with strengths and
weaknesses, thus, finding a good match is idiosyncratic. It is worth it to shop around to find a good fit
for you. Expect intake paperwork at the first session.
VI. Questions to ask yourself about your contact with potential therapists (over the phone or in person):
 Did their manner put you at ease? Any red flags?
 Did they answer your questions directly?
 Did they seem genuine and respectful? Did you feel listened to?
 Do you have similar values and goals?
 Were they prompt in getting back to you, have convenient times to meet, and have a comfortable
office space?
 Did they ensure your confidentiality?
VII. Please remember that your therapist should never:
 Minimize your experiences or your feelings.
 Have a relationship with you outside of counseling.
 Force you to do anything you don’t want to do.

