Instructional Activity

Can you identify the cognitive expectations of these
mathematics activities?
Read the following instructional activities and indicate the cognitive expectation level(s)
for that activity in the first blank column. Then work in small groups to compare answers and
provide any comments or additional levels in the second blank column. Please note that the
descriptions provided for the activity may not provide you enough information, so be sure to think about
what more is needed to indicate cognitive expectation.
Instructional Activity
Cognitive Expectation
1. Students watch classmates write problems and
solutions on the blackboard.
2. Students read a chapter of the text and answer the
questions at the end of the chapter.
3. Students complete a worksheet of word problems.
4. Students review the problems they had for
homework the night before.
5. Students reflect on the uses of mathematics in their
daily lives and work in pairs to design brochures
that make specific mathematical concepts clear and
interesting to a popular audience.
6. Students will explore the New Hampshire primaries
and the polling process by analyzing polling
information, examining the effects
of polls, and creating graphs that represent polling
data.
7. Students are asked to identify the mystery
operation a computer is performing. Students give
the computer two numbers to calculate, and it tells
them the answer. This is their first piece of
evidence. They then gather more evidence by
continuing to enter pairs of numbers for the
computer to calculate until they think they know
what is happening.
