PLANT STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS STUDY GUIDE: QUIZ ON 9/25 I. Students will match the plant structure (part) to its function (job). Stems Stems store and move water in the plant and provide support and protection for the plant. Leaves Leaves produce food for plants when there is light. Flowers Flowers insects and birds that will help with pollination. Fruit Fruit is formed to protect the plant’s seed. Seeds Seeds allow the plant to reproduce. Roots Roots take in water and nutrients. They also hold the plant in place. II. Plant Adaptations: Students will select words from a word bank to complete the sentences. Words in bold will be the words given in the word bank. Each section (a, b, and c) will have its own word bank. Plants have structures (parts) and behaviors (things they do) that will help them survive and reproduce. a.) SEED DISPERSAL Some plants, like a dandelion, have seeds with parachutes that help them travel by the WIND. Some seeds have hollow spaces that allow them to float. These seeds travel by WATER. Other seeds are like cannonballs. When the fruit is ripe, the seeds will BURST from the fruit. Finally, some seeds are hitchhikers. They may STICK to an animal’s FUR or to a human’s CLOTHING. b.) FLOWERS Flowers come in a variety of SHAPES, SIZES, and COLORS. Petals are SCENTED and COLORED to attract birds and insects for the purpose of POLLINATION. The coloration and scents of flowers make them ATTRACTIVE to insects, birds, and other animals. c.) RESPONSE TO LIGHT Plants need some form of LIGHT to produce food. Plants will always bend their STEMS and turn their LEAVES toward sunlight. This adaptation is called TROPISM. This is a BEHAVIORAL adaptation.
