How did we get to this point?
• City of Rexburg has wanted to do curbside recycling for many years,
but it has always been cost prohibitive.
• Last December BYU-I approached us with an opportunity to:
– Provide curbside recycling at no additional costs to residents
– Put BYU-I students to work, which in turn puts money back into our economy
– Move the City of Rexburg and BYU-Idaho to leaders in sustainability efforts
across Idaho and eventually the U.S.
Where are we at today?
• Cresthaven and Hidden Valley were selected as trial neighborhoods
for data collection and citizen participation.
• 3 Phases for curbside recycling have been identified
– Phase 1, collect and weigh garbage for two months to get base line data
– Phase 2, ask citizens to separate recycled goods and garbage. Both waste
streams will be weighed, recycled goods will be sorted & weighed by commodity
– Phase 3, if trial can show operations can break even, curbside recycling will
begin in June.
