The official Newsletter of the Banyule Cricket Club Volume 10, 2008/09 Proudly Sponsored by: 22nd January 2009 Web Address: www.banyulecc.com.au 1st’s into one-day final! It was a great weekend for third and fourth grade, both getting important wins. Fourth grade still sit a game out of the top four, but with two out of their three remaining games against top four sides, their fate is in their own hands. Third grade remain top of the ladder by one game. Unfortunately, they just missed out on taking the one-day premiership by 0.25% from Bellfield. Another win this game will go a long way to ensuring a top two finish. Due to Sunday’s loss against Rosanna, second grade have now slipped to second, but are only 2-points behind this round’s opponent, Heidelberg. A win here will see them return to the top of the table, a loss could see them slip to third, so it is a big match for the boys. We finished third on the one-day ladder, but even if we had won on Sunday, Greensborough and Heidelberg had a far stronger percentage, so we wouldn’t have made the final. Despite Sunday’s loss, first grade still see themselves sitting top of the ladder in both forms, having booked a place in the one-day grand-final against Heidelberg on the 1st of February. We still hold a 15-point buffer on third and fourth, so one more win will see us hosting a semi-final. We still sit 9-points clear of Heidelberg, so can’t lose top spot this round, but a win this round would see us 15-points clear on top with 2-games remaining. Courtesy of our strong positions in the top three grades, we still sit top of the ladder in the Pilkington Shield, 29 points clear of Heidelberg. With first and second grade both playing Heidelberg this round, two wins would just about guarantee we take home the Pilkington Shield this year! Congratulations to everyone who played in the victorious 20twenty match against Keilor on Tuesday night. It was an extremely exciting finish to an excellent game for Banyule. Next round we have Ashburton at Ashburton. Please see Daniel Barnes for the particular information about player sponsorship. Spud Quotes of the Week “The number is 000” Scott Butler, on Tom Woodman asking him “how you feeling?” during his 47 on Sunday “No wonder we’re on the bottom of the ladder” After a wide was signaled against Viewbank, Drakey, felt that the whole competition is conspiring against Viewbank as “they don’t get any wides” “You’ve never faced anything as quick as this, champ” Keilor “speedster” to Steve Pinner in the 20twenty match after playing and missing at a ball. 20twenty vs. Keilor huge one for the opposition. Mumbles was joined by Arj with a run a ball needed. The tension on the ground & in the crowd was palpable as the sun disappeared from sight & semi darkness enveloped the ground. 5 to win off the last over brought back the painful memories of the clash with Epping last season but there was to be no Banyule heartbreak this time as Arj proceeded to pull the first ball for four down the ground & then the next through mid wicket for the winning runs. A fantastic team effort against an opposition that rated themselves way too highly and keeps us in this exciting competition. One win from the MCG! Only Ashburton stands in our way! Go Bears! The boys walk off victorious…one win away from the “G” Banyule 6/116 Keilor 9/112 B. O'Connor 32 B. O'Connor 3/20 P. McMurray 26 P. Davis 2/19 S. Pinner 14 D. Barnes 1/1 A. Arora 10* P. McMurray 1/24 The quarter final of the Cricket Victoria VB Twenty20 Cup saw the underdogs from Banyule journey to the wilds of Keilor to take on the North West representatives. With images of the classic 'Mighty Ducks' movie franchise in our minds, Captain Gordon Bombay (Brent O'Connor) implored us to take note of Keilor not bothering to warm up and ignore the main runway of Tullamarine that seemed to be very adjacent to the ground. Not surprisingly we took to the field as is our habit & Rowdy opened up from the Old Calder Highway end. 11 runs later we thought we might be chasing something approaching 200 as the Keilor openers enjoyed a very uncharacteristically expensive over from the Rowdy one. Ocka & PD got use back on track with PD bowling an immaculate line & length that made every run hard work. Chopper entered the attack & maintained the pressure as did D-Lo for.... 4 balls. A well struck drive saw Daniel abandon the 'bum fielding' technique that he has mastered & field the ball with his left hand. A badly broken & gashed ring finger resulted as Barnesy headed off to the Western Hospital for treatment. Moshy was introduced & continued the miserly bowling that was being backed up with a first class effort in the field. Regular wickets continued to fall & Keilor's final total of 112 would have been taken at the beginning of play. Ocka & Doc headed out to get things going, with Doc aiming to continue his solid 20/20 form that has eluded him in other forms of the game! Some seriously sharp bowling on the turf pitch was handled ably with Doc racing to 14 before being run out. Rowdy joined Ocka for a vital partnership that saw the score tick over to about 70 before Rowds was out to a brilliant catch. A few quick wickets followed with Ocka's being a Dlo leaves the field in obvious discomfort. Occa and PD are concerned for the hospital staff. Results – Round 10 & 11 A GRADE Banyule 2/133 B O’Connor 91* S Pinner 24 Def Viewbank 131 P McMurray 2/16 B O’Connor 3/12 S Clapton 2/25 P Davis 2/25 The quick trip across the swamp to the bunker saw the good guys take on the improving Viewbank side, that had knocked Greensborough over & were chock full of confidence. With Chopper unavailable, Spudda came back into the 11 after missing the previous week do to 'Hasselhoff' commitments. As has become the norm we started off with the ball in our hands, which brought about instant success with Rowdy claiming a wicket with his very first ball. Ocka chimed in soon after for #2 & when Rowdy got another the 'bankers were 3-12. With a vastly improved effort in the field the opposition was all about survival with the small & reasonably quick ground not being taken advantage of. A couple of small partnerships coincided with a few slips up in the field (mostly off the luckless D-Lo) and a reasonably respectable 131 was reached by Viewbank by the close of their innings (all out of 40 overs). Ocka & Doc started off solidly against a few quick spell from Fernando (both thought it was the quickest spell either had faced in a long time) and kept the score ticking over at the other end. Both found the boundary regularly with Ocka's square drives off Fernando being exquisite. A 10 wicket win looked a possibility until Doc was beaten by a late in swinger, out LBW for 24. 1-77. The remaining runs all seemed to flow from Ocka's in form Slazenger with Spud & Rowdy both contributing 1 & Ocka finishing 91 not out. Banyule 2-133 off 24.2 overs, our first comprehensive win of the one dayers. Banyule 116 be going at nearly 4 runs an over and with 5 wickets in the shed, we were looking at a potentially big score. Thankfully through some tight bowling by Moshie, Cheesy and Johno we were able to restrict them and keep the score to an attainable 8/172. Def by Rosanna 8/155 P McMurray 26 R Hartnett 21 D Barnes 3/25 J Wilson 2/29 Sunday saw a vital clash against the arch rivals from De Winton Park that would see us guarantee a home one day final with victory. This time it was Ocka who was unavailable with Chopper returning to the side. No change with the toss though with Rosanna winning & deciding to bat first. Rowdy was again got us off to a great start, combining with Larry who took a great diving catch. Larry then chimed in with his own scalp & the 'Zannas were 2-10. A few reasonable partnerships began to grow the Rosanna totals while fantastic bowling from D-Lo continued to maintain the pressure. The man with a million nicknames finished with 3-25 which was an excellent reward after bowling with no luck the previous day. Sam Norman's 2nd A grade spell was a very promising indication of things to come, finishing with an unlucky 0-17 off 4 overs. Rosanna closed out their innings with some lusty hitting to set the good guys a very gettable 155. Sam and Pierre were able to push the score along nicely to 22 when Sam received another shocker of a decision (no luck this year at all) when he was given out LBW to an inside edge onto the pad. From there both Pierre and Cheesy took the game out of West Ivanhoe hands with a brilliant partnership of 93, before Pierre (55) was run out attempting a 3rd run. Throughout the innings both Pierre and Cheesy showed some solid defence, with some sensible attacking shots and some aggressive running, with Pierre close to giving Cheesy a coronary from all of the 3’s they ran. From there, the run rate required for the last 10 over’s was a 5 runs an over, and with an aggressive 30 from Smithy the game was ours to be had, of which we did it with 2 and a bit over’s to spare. With the first of the double header done and dusted it was now onto the second part to try and play side by side with the 1st in the One Day final. Banyule 185 Unfortunately our run chase was short circuited by poor shot selection, tight bowling & a run out that stopped us in our tracks. Spud, Mumbles & Rowdy were the only bats to get going along with some big hitting from D-Lo when the game was all but over. All out for 116 with 6 overs left showed that were were right in the game with some wickets in hand. A disappointing loss but our first since October. A huge game against Heidelberg coming up & another One Day Grand Final against the Bergers thanks to other results falling our way. B GRADE Banyule 3/174 Def M Kernaghan 66* T Woodman 55 W Kazi 30 West Ivanhoe United 8/172 M Kernaghan 2/19 M Johnson 2/29 M Lower 2/51 With a spot up for grabs in the One day final, it was imperative that we win the first game of the double header. With only 7 guys at the ground with 30 minutes before the first ball was bowled and a very ordinary warm up session, the signs weren’t good. After losing the toss and having to bowl (and all 11 players finally at the ground) we still didn’t look totally switched on. This all changed once Johno bowled their opener on the third ball of the day and we were away. With Hodgy bowling beautifully at one end and Johno picking up a second, the score was 2/10 off 6 and we were right on top. With Hodgy bowling out his whole allotment of 8 over’s (1/14) and Cheesy and Moshie taking up the attack to see us through to drinks West Ivanhoe were 3/45 at the half way mark. From drinks West Ivanhoe were able to put on some big over’s in between the 20th and 30th over’s to all of a sudden S Place 34 W Kazi 38 S Butler 47 Def by Rosanna 6/189 M Kernaghan 2/36 Some stiff and sore bodies (Johno) were on display during a much improved warm up and it appeared the guys were ready to go. With Butt’s and The Mull coming in from Saturday’s side, we were there to play some good cricket. Things got off to a great start with Tom and Sam pushing the score along at 4 runs an over, when Pierre was run out (2nd time for the weekend) by an unlucky direct hit from side on to be out for 22 and the score was 1/45. Unfortunately the very next ball we were 2/45 as Cheesy went from Chocolate’s to Boiled Lollies and was out LBW for a golden duck on a ball that didn’t get up on their deck like it does ours and the momentum was stifled a little. Smithy and Sam then went about consolidating the innings and moved the score onto 92, when Sam was given out the last ball before drinks, caught behind off a spinner when it came off his pad (seriously needs to buy a Tatts Lotto ticket). Just after drinks Smithy was dismissed when the score was 4/110 with 13 over’s to go and Butt’s batting brilliantly (one thinks his pure spite for Rosanna was the motivating factor). With a partnership of 30 with Moshie (15) and 42 with Johno (12), Butt’s was in serious need of some oxygen and an IV drip off VB. With quick runs the key of the last couple of over’s we unfortunately lost our last 5 wickets for 3 runs, to set up a total of 185. The ground was quick and the deck was lifeless, so we really had to be on our game to protect the score. Johno and Moshie opened the bowling, with both bowling well but with no luck, the first breakthrough coming from a good piece of fielding from Moshie to Josh and a run out occurred. With the introduction of Cheesy and The Mull (otherwise known as the Hawk), the scoring rate slowed down and a couple of wickets fell. Cheesy picked up an obvious LBW and created a snick to gully where Johno snaffled it, whilst The Mull grabbed his first 2nd grade wicket with a great caught behind with Josh standing up to the stumps and we were right in the game at 4/68. From there, unfortunately Rosanna were able to get on top of our bowlers with some lusty hitting and some pressurised running on an uneven outfield, which caused us to loose our way a little. From there they only lost 2 more wickets and passed our score 6 down and with 4.5 over’s to spare. The efforts of all involved could not be questioned, as for the whole game all 11 players busted the gut in an effort to pull off a victory, so well done to everyone involved. With results not going our way, it now means the 2nd grade didn’t make the One Day final, so the focus is now the three 2 day games we have against Heidelberg (home), Greensborough (away) and Old Ivanhoe (home) to ensure we win those in the lead up to the finals and to get out and enjoy a few beers whilst supporting the 1st in the One Day final. C GRADE Banyule 5/216 G Renshaw 36 C McDonald 86* T Veal 30* Def Old Ivanhoe 8/194 P Barnes 2/20 M Harte 2/46 With Scooby out due to a broken rib from some hitherto unknown West Ivanhoe speedster who must bowl at 150kmh the week before and Fez going down with something fluey on the morning of the game another couple of changes hit the 3rds. Luckily we were able to call on Cam McDonald and Nick Botham to help and Renna also makes a welcome back up from the 4ths and we call Usher from retirement to again improve average age but balance that with Gordo making his maiden 3rd grade appearance. We batted first with the young pairing of Jed and Renna leading off. Jed played a couple of beauties to the fence before getting cleaned up and then Captain Courageous Butts got his usual ching ching and then also left for 22. This pitted Rennna and Cam McDonald together in a great partnership of 83 which set up the innings. Renna was magnificent in his usual way knocking it around for 36 and then selflessly sacrificing his wicket as we upped the ante after the drinks break. Hunniford and Usher both lost their hobs in quick fashion before Veally joins young McDonald at the crease. Macca (not McKinlay but looks the goods) then put on a show for the boys with drives and hook shots hitting the boundary with such regularity that Gordo was struggling to keep the scoreboard up to date. Macca finished with a sensational 86no to go with his 50 at last start cameo (he can really bat). Veally provided great support for second week in a row to post 30no. We got 5/216 off our allotment. We bowled and Philo and Beefy Botham (Nick Botham; no he’s actually skinny as a rake), began well. Philo got two wickets, bowled his 8 overs out and then ran away to some party and young Jed Place came on and subbed. Beefy was sensational bowling a fantastic line and length and rightly got an early wicket. His 8 overs were awesome at 1/17 with 3 maidens (he can really bowl). Usher came on grabbed a couple of wickets, one a beauty to Jed keeping behind the stumps (Renna now a star cover fieldsman). At 6/73 we were right on top but some late hitting down the order gave us a scare big time. We eventually held the old boys to 8/194 to keep top spot on the ladder. D GRADE Banyule 5/206 B Wallwork 73 R Kernaghan 35 F Chowdary 28 J Samad 23* Def Greensborough 8/193 J Fraser 3/39 At home against Greensborough White with a new scoreboard we were sent in to bat with Brian Wallwork hitting the ball to all parts of the field for a well made 73. Ralph continued on from last week with 35 and Feroze 28.We set ourselves to make 200 plus which looked a long way off at 5/171.Steve Standcombe and Jordan Samad set about reaching our target with Steve 17N.O and Jordan 23N.O finish our 40 overs at 5/206. The innings of both Steve and Jordan was one we needed to reach our target with Jordan showing that he is a class player and for two players who have not played much senior cricket their performance was outstanding. We returned to the field after the break knowing that we had to bowl and field well to restrict Greensborough. James Fraser again produced the goods when required to break vital partnerships to finish with 3 wickets. Brian Wallwork bowled well to restrict the scoring rate in the final overs to see us over the line for the win we had to have. Mark Pengilly performed well behind the stumps with too many balls down leg side making his job difficult. Our fielding was much better this week lead by Jordan and Nick Bates. This week we return to the 2 day format against 2nd placed Viewbank at home. Thanks to the committee for approving the purchase of the scoreboard as now we know the state of the game which helped with our win on Saturday. Finally can we have longer tea breaks so that Feroze doesn’t have to fill his pockets with food and continue to stuff his face on the field.
