Read these scenarios to the students (or project them or print them, whatever works for you). Let them discuss what they would do for a few minutes. Then have each group share with the class. With each suggestion that the groups provide, try to determine if that will make the situation worse, better, or not change it at all. 1. This girls that sit behind you in your English class are always talking and gossiping about something. You often over hear their conversations. Today, they are making fun of what your best friend, who isn’t in the class, is wearing. What will you do? Follow up question: Is this bullying or is this just girls being mean? How do you know the difference? 2. A new student, Cody, just started sitting at your lunch table. Today is the third day he has been there. One of your friends at the table, John, starts making fun of Cody by repeating everything he says in a funny voice. You feel uncomfortable and feel bad for Cody, but you are afraid to say anything to John because you want to continue to be his friend. What will you do? Is this a situation of bullying? 3. For the third day in a row when you are on your way to lunch another student (Brian) yells “retard” as you walk by. You notice he is looking at you when he says it and all of the other boys he is with laugh. The other students around you pretend they didn’t hear anything. What will you do?
