Name ______________________________________ Date ______________ Per ________ Intro to Waves Webquest PART ONE: Introduction to Waves Click on the link to answer the following questions: http://gpb.pbslearningmedia.org/asset/lsps07_int_waves/?utm_source=teachersdomain_redirect/asset/lsps07_int_wa ves/utm_medium=teachersdomain/asset/lsps07_int_waves/utm_campaign=td_redirects 1. Describe the motion of the wave of the people and the string. What type of wave is being demonstrated in these examples? 2. Under the “Demonstration Tab,” experiment with the different medium densities and wave controls. Describe the changes you observe as you adjust the different variables. 3. Under the “Water Waves Tab,” watch the water waves animation and then explain the motion of a water wave. PART TWO: What is a Wave? Click on the link to answer the following questions below: http://www.ducksters.com/science/physics/waves.php 4. What is a wave? 5. What do waves transfer? _________________________________ 6. What are the 2 things waves can travel through? READ THE FOLLOWING TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW. A wave is a repeating disturbance or vibration that transfers or moves energy from place to place. Waves are created when a source of energy (force) causes a vibration. A vibration is a repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion. Waves carry energy through empty space or through a medium without transporting matter. While all waves can transmit energy through a medium, certain waves can also transmit energy through empty space. A medium is a material through which waves can travel. It can be a solid, liquid, or gas. When waves travel through a medium, the particles of the medium are not carried along with the wave. When there is no medium, certain waves (electromagnetic) can travel through empty space 7. How are waves created? 8. What is a vibration? 9. Do waves transfer or transport matter? PART THREE: CATEGORIES OF WAVES Click on the link to answer the following questions below: http://www.ducksters.com/science/physics/waves.php 10. Waves can be divided into various categories depending on their _____________________________. 11. What are the 2 types or categories of waves? 12. Define a mechanical wave. 13. What do a mechanical wave require? 14. What is a medium? What states of matter can a medium be? 15. Define an electromagnetic wave. PART FOUR: TYPLES OF WAVES: TRANSVERSE VS. LONGITUDINAL (COMPRESSIONAL) WAVES Click on the links to complete the chart below. http://www.slideshare.net/hmsoh/longitudinal-and-transverse-waves & https://www.everythingmaths.co.za/science/grade-10/09-longitudinal-waves/09-longitudinal-waves-02.cnxmlplus 16. Complete the chart below. (Use slides 1-11 for the 1st link-slideshare) Definition How do the waves move Illustration Examples Transverse Wave Label and define the crest & Trough 4 examples Longitudinal (Compressional Wave) Label the compression and rarefaction 2 examples 17. Define Compression. 18. Define Rarefaction. Click on the link: http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/Demos/waves/wavemotion.html 19. Which type of wave would a primary wave be? Explain? 20. Which type of wave would a secondary wave be? Explain? 21. How do transverse waves differ from longitudinal waves? PART FIVE: LIGHT WAVES: Read the following below to answer the questions. Light waves are considered electromagnetic waves which are waves that can travel through matter or empty space where matter is not present. Light waves are the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye. Light waves are transverse waves that can travel without a medium through empty space. 22. Light waves are considered to be what type of wave? Why? 23. Light waves are apart of what spectrum? 24. Are light waves transverse or longitudinal waves? 25. Light waves are the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to what? PART FIVE: Bringing it all together: Click on the following links to complete the chart below. http://www.slideshare.net/hlayala/waves-ppt (Use slides 1-14), http://www.differencebetween.net/science/differencebetween-mechanical-and-electromagnetic-waves/, & http://www.tutorvista.com/physics/electromagnetic-wavestransverse-or-longitudinal 26. Complete the chart below: Type of Wave Travels Through 4 Examples Transverse, Longitudinal (Compressional), or Both Mechanical Waves Electromagnetic Waves 27. Complete the Quizziz review: The code will be given to you by your teacher. You should keep retrying until you make a 100. _______________________ 1st attempt grade: _________________ check off for 100
