TEAMS CHALLENGE COURSE CORPORATE PURPOSE The purpose of the Northbrook Park District’s Teams Challenge Course is to provide a safe, high-quality program that assists in personal and professional development. MISSION Founded more than 20 years ago, the Teams Challenge Course is a series of activities, cooperative games, trust initiatives, and team-building exercises. Our mission is to meet the needs of participants and assist with successful attainment of goals through experiential education. The goal is to enrich the quality of community living through diversity, appreciation and activity. Our facilitators are trained and certified annually in areas of experiential education, adventure programming and coaching. Additionally, all facilitators are CPR/First Aid-certified. BENEFITS The Teams Course Program provides opportunities to discover leadership, respect, support and fun among group participants. Groups can improve team cohesiveness by sharing ideas and overcoming difficult tasks and selfimposed limits. Our programs allow participants to learn to view obstacles as opportunities for growth. By participating in team-building activities, participants can learn to: • Give and receive feedback in a supportive, non-judgmental fashion • Practice good listening with an intent to understand • Address feelings and attitudes towards problems • Collaborate and cooperate • Understand their role and the impact of their leadership styles • Value team identity and interdependence among groups • Identify problems and create realistic solutions • Understand the principles of teamwork PROGRAM DESIGN All programs are designed for the needs and goals of participants. The Group Assessment Form will provide crucial information about your group and its needs. Programs are based on 8-12 people per group for students in grades 4-8 and 10-14 people per group for high school students and adults, with a maximum of six groups. Programs are designed to run 4-8 hours and can include cooperative activities, the Teams Course, the Climbing Tower, or a combination of those. RATES Rates are based on the number of participants, number of groups, length of program, program design, and number of facilitators requested. The Registration Form contains more details. Note: Extra participants who arrive on the day of the program will be charged $20 per person, to be paid before they are allowed to participate. WAIVER Everyone, including accompanying staff members and/or parents, must complete and sign a waiver. If needed, group leaders can make copies of the enclosed waiver. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian read, sign and date the waiver. All participant waivers must be turned in on the day of the program. Participants without a signed waiver will not be allowed on the Teams Course or the Climbing Tower (no exceptions). PROGRAM AND SAFETY STANDARDS The Teams Course Program and Climbing Tower adhere to a “Challenge by Choice” or “Choose Your Challenge” philosophy, which allows people to choose their level of participation, without limiting their involvement and experiences. The course also supports “Full Value Contracts” or “Five Finger Contracts” made by group participants. These philosophies form the basis for a safe and enjoyable program. However, group participants must share the responsibility for safety and follow these guidelines: • • • • • • • Participants must wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes, such as tennis shoes or hiking boots. No one wearing open-toed / open-heeled shoes, such as sandals or clogs, will be allowed to participate. Participants should dress comfortably and appropriately for weather conditions. Clothing will get dirty. Tank tops and midriff shirts are prohibited. Participants should not wear jewelry, including rings, watches, ear rings, and necklaces. Remove all items, such as keys and money, from your pockets before starting the program. If participants require an inhaler, medication or medical-related materials, the group leader should collect them and bring in one bag. Smoking is prohibited in all Park District buildings and on the course. No drugs or alcohol are permitted on District property. Cameras are allowed on the course at the participant’s risk. Cell phones and pagers are not allowed. If participants are under the age of 18, an adult must accompany each group and stay with the group during the program. The adult must be able to enforce discipline within the group. The Teams Course Facilitator is not responsible for disciplining participants or supervising them, outside of programming duties. Participation by the accompanying adult is optional. If participants will arrive separately, the group leader must arrive earlier to meet and organize the group. The facilitator is not responsible for supervising participants before the start of the program. Failure to comply with the above standards will result in the cancellation of the program. Facilitators will announce other safety guidelines related to specific activities, before and during each Teams Course Program. Anyone requiring additional information can call Craig J. Patterson, Teams Course Coordinator, at 847⋅274⋅0527. REGISTRATION Please complete the Registration Form, Cancellation Policy, and Group Assessment Form, and return all three with the deposit.
