JOB DESCRIPTION Development Director Job Title: Development Director EHB Head Office - Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Location: Marlow, Buckinghamshire Salary: Competitive Hours: All hours worked Responsible to: Chief Executive ENGLAND HOCKEY BOARD England Hockey Board (EHB) is the National Governing Body for the sport of Hockey. EHB has income and expenditure of circa £9m p.a. It is responsible for the management and development of the sport from grass roots to elite activities. EHB has a membership comprising clubs (900+), counties (45) and regions (6 including the Combined Services) which affiliate to it. About 100,000 individuals over the age of 16 play regularly in the club system with an estimated 20,000 playing at university/college. Over 15,000 coaches, umpires and officials are supported and developed by the EHB. EHB employs 65 staff. EHB also use over 200 consultants in performance / coach / official / leadership education and development, all of which fall within the development team remit. EHBs vision is to become a ‘Nation where Hockey matters’ through “providing inspirational leadership for all to fulfil their potential”. The current focus for the organisation is delivery of its 5 objectives within the 2013 -2017 strategic plan: Growth in participation - Increase the number of people participating in hockey to ensure a vibrant and secure future for the sport International success - Continue to raise the performance bar of athlete and coach development to maintain world level standards and create positive role models for the sport Increased visibility - Deliver high profile quality domestic and international events that attract increased spectator numbers, TV coverage, and sponsorship Enhanced infrastructure - Enhance the playing experience by improving facilities, coaching, officiating and the support to volunteers, clubs and all our stakeholders A strong and respected NGB - Continue to maintain high governance standards and diversify sources of income to reduce reliance on grants EHB is seeking an inspirational leader and outstanding manager with a commercial and customer EHB JD DD 2013 JOB DESCRIPTION Development Director focused approach to increasing participation and developing the sporting infrastructure. As well as being an excellent communicator who can quickly establish credibility, the successful candidate will have prior experience of high level strategic planning, complex stakeholder management with a proven track record in customer acquisition / retention and income generation. The role requires an ambitious and driven individual who can build strong partnerships across internal teams and external stakeholders to maximise the sports young people and adult growth potential. Importantly EHB is looking for someone who can look beyond traditional development initiatives and be strongly customer centric in their approach to delivering products and services that can meet the sports ambitious plans for growing participation and strengthening the sports infrastructure. The successful candidate will demonstrate a real passion for success and have a track record of delivering against strategic and operational plans and targets and be a highly effective people manager. ROLE SUMMARY Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Development Director will be responsible for providing leadership, management and strategic direction to the development department to deliver the 20132017 Strategic Plan. The Development Director will lead new development initiatives and seek commercial opportunities to deliver products and services that can meet the sport’s ambitious plans for growing participation and strengthening the sports infrastructure. This will include managing complex stakeholder arrangements, customer acquisition and retention programmes and income generation initiatives. As a member of the Executive Team and a voting Board member of EHB, the Development Director will provide day to day operational leadership and business wide leadership, as well as playing a critical role in setting the strategic direction of the sport. REPORTS The Development Director reports to the Chief Executive and works as part of an Executive team. Other members of the Executive team are: Chief Executive Commercial Director Finance and Administration Director Performance Director The Development Director is responsible for the permanent staff and consultants in the development department which includes 30 permanent staff and a large number of consultants. The Development Director currently has 4 Direct reports: EHB JD DD 2013 JOB DESCRIPTION Development Director Officiating and Volunteers Manager Network Manager (who manages 12 Relationship Managers) Rush and Back to Hockey Manager Young people and students Manager KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Executive Director responsibilities Statutory responsibility as a Director for EHB, a company limited by guarantee Responsibility with the Board to set the strategic direction for the sport Responsibility with the other Executive Directors to ensure the effective day to day management of the business and delivery of the operations plan Preparing papers and presenting for decision making at Executive and Board meetings Attending events on behalf of EHB Strategic, operational and budget planning Supporting the CEO in the preparation of the strategic plan and relevant funding submissions EHB Policy Development Annual preparation of operational plans and budgets Leadership and Management Lead the vision for development to drive growth in participation and an enhanced infrastructure and support to volunteers, clubs, associations and other key stakeholders.
