Postdoctoral Position in Plant Molecular Genetics

Postdoctoral Position in Plant Molecular Genetics
Department
The Molecular Plant Biology / Phytopathology department located at the Department of Plant and
Microbial Biology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in plant molecular genetics. We are
one of the world’s leading research groups in the field of cereal genetics and plant-pathogen
interactions. Our main research interest lies in the use of cutting-edge genomics, molecular biology
and bioinformatics to unravel the genetic and molecular basis of plant-pathogen interactions in cereals.
Task
The aim of this project is to identify novel quantitative resistance genes in rice and maize against
fungal and bacterial diseases. During this project, 500 rice landraces will be phenotyped for resistance
against rice blast and bacterial blight under greenhouse and field conditions. Candidate genes for
broad-spectrum resistance will be identified using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and
candidate gene validated through transformation.
The project is done in a close collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the
Philippines. Additional information about this project can be found under the following link:
http://www.r4d.ch/modules/thematically-open-research/natural-rice-diversity
In a second project, candidate genes for northern corn leaf blight resistance in maize will be evaluated
and molecularly characterized.
Requirements
We are seeking an outstanding young scientist who has recently received a PhD degree in plant
biology, genetics, molecular biology or equivalent. Applicants should have a demonstrated
background and interest in genetics and molecular biology, including experience in the identification
and validation of genes and in working with transgenic plants. In addition, the candidate must have a
sound knowledge of genome-wide association studies. Work on cereal plants or plant-pathogens is
desirable, but not required. The position requires strong communication and management skills. The
working language of the research group is English; German skills are helpful, but not essential.
Offers
We offer a friendly, international, dynamic and team-oriented scientific environment at the UZH. In
particular, this project offers to work at the interface of modern molecular biology and breeding. The
position might include travel and short-time stays at the International Rice Research Institute. The
UZH is the largest University of Switzerland with internationally leading institutes in the Life
Sciences. The postdoctoral position is available from August 2017 and runs on a fixed-term contract
for 2 years, with the option for a third year. We offer a competitive salary. The UZH is an equal
opportunity employer. Zurich is an attractive city in beautiful surroundings, a multinational
population, and many educational and recreational opportunities.
