From Our Principal
Mr. Pleuss - Upper Grades
On October 7-9, the faculty had the opportunity to
attend the Michigan District teachers’ conference
at Michigan Lutheran High School. Worship,
education workshops and seminars, meetings,
and fellowship were packed into three active
days. It is almost more tiring to attend conference
than it is to spend a day in the classroom. Please
notice I said “almost.” This year we got to spend
our evenings in our own beds instead of a motel.
During the week of October 26-30, students in
your school celebrated Christian Education Week.
Our week began with fall fun games outdoors on
Monday. Students were divided into groups for
relay games and other individual sports.
On Tuesday, we held a Math Path game. Teams
of mixed ages competed against one another in a
fun math competition using objects and locations
found on our property. Measuring, counting, and
doing mathematical computations filled the time.
A trip to Brookdale Senior Living Center was the
order of the day on Wednesday. Children sang
songs and presented residents with handmade
gifts. The students were surprised to receive gifts
of their own (each received a bag of candy) from
the residents.
On Thursday, students worked on a Geo Trivia
activity now on display in the church’s fellowship
hall. It seems as if Anders Johnson is quite a
traveler. He has visited more states than anyone
in school, including the teachers.
Friday’s event was our special breakfast and
chapel service. Students also got to meet and
visit with the pen pals they corresponded with all
month. We hope everyone had a good time. All
week long, we appreciated the blessings of
Christian education in our church and school.
Our first quarter mission offering for our Synod’s
mission work in Hong Kong totaled $102.60. The
second quarter mission offering will be given to
our Synod’s Christian Aid and Relief fund to help
people worldwide who may be suffering from
various disastrous events.
Students will soon begin to learn their parts for
the children’s Christmas service. This year’s
service is on Sunday evening, December 20,
beginning at 5:30 PM. Please note the new time.
By popular demand, the service has been moved
ahead one hour so that children can get home
and to bed in a more timely way.
The students and staff are looking forward to a
few days off to celebrate Thanksgiving this month.
Please remember to show your thanks to our
loving and gracious Lord for all his gifts, both
physical and spiritual, this Thanksgiving.

"Here I stand; I cannot do otherwise.
God help me. Amen.” - Martin Luther
Martin Luther stood before
Emperor Charles V and other
leaders of the day. He had
been told to recant, or take
back, his writings about the
Bible and the way to heaven. But he knew that to
do so would be to go against God Himself. So
Luther refused. His words have become famous,
and they provide for us a wonderful example of
Christian courage.
We’ve spent the past two weeks learning all about
Martin Luther and his work. Luther lived during
the time of knights and castles, kings and queens.
His life story is exciting and inspiring. We thank
God for His gift of this faithful servant.
Our kindergarten students have
completed their first time through the
alphabet. We are able to match
capital and lower case letters and to
name them correctly. Now for the fun part! We
will study the sounds the letters make and begin
to put them together to make words.
First and second graders are working on addition
concepts. We are able to practice our doubles
facts together (5+5, 6+6, and so on). These facts
are so helpful, because they make it easier to add
many other combinations, like the doubles plus
one (5+6, 6+7). Second graders are ready to add
double digit numbers with regrouping. We are
looking forward to a challenge.
Please take time to admire our display in the
fellowship hall. We’ve posted papers and artwork
about Martin Luther and the Reformation. The
results of our Geo Trivia activity are charted on
maps, a number line, and bar graphs. You’ll find
such information as where we were born and how
far we travel to school each day.
Be sure to take a look at the photos from
Christian Education week. You’ll especially enjoy
the pictures of us and our pen pals. Meeting
them this past Friday was exciting for everyone!
Science 5: We will finish a very complicated
chapter on the human body systems and then go
on to an easier chapter about plants.
Science 3-4: Students just had a test
on plants and animals living together
and will continue with a chapter on
water and the water cycle.
Science 1-2: First and second graders are
discussing the life cycles of plants, trees and
animals. Next we will learn about food chains.
Math 3: We are now deep into multiplication. We
have done the easy ones (0, 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10)
and will work on 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 before tackling
11 and 12.
Computers: Grades 3-5 are working
with different programs to help them
learn the states and capitals in the U.S.
Grades 1 & 2 are using interactive games to help
them with reading word or math facts. The
kindergarten class also gets to use the computers
on Friday afternoon. They were introduced to the
computer and are learning how to maneuver the
mouse to play educational games on
www.abcya.com. They really enjoyed their time
on the computer.
Preschool
In our Bible stories we will finish our Moses
stories and then learn about Samuel, David and
Goliath, the Fiery Furnace, and Daniel before
beginning the Christmas stories starting with
Zechariah. We have completed the letters S, M,
R, T and N. In November we will add H, A, V,
and C. All of the boys need practice forming their
letters and writing their names.
Remember that each student should have a
change of clothes in his back pack, just in case of
any accidents (spills or otherwise). If you have
any questions about anything, don’t hesitate
to ask at school or you may call my cell
269-325-2120.
