Spring break l 40 hours l Red Card Obtain training for national certification to fight wildland fires (a good summer job). Learn to do prescribed burns for habitat and conservation management. After successfully completing a week of classroom and hands-on training at the Illinois Fire Service Institute’s Champaign campus, you will meet the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) requirements to be certified/qualified as a basic wildland firefighter. What is a “Red Card”? It is a credential issued by a home or hiring agency which has been recognized as part of a national qualification system that is used by all federal and many state and private wildland fire organizations. All firefighters assigned to a fire being managed by a federal jurisdiction must meet the Red Card qualifications. NWCG Red Card Wildland Firefighter Training March 22 - 26, 2010 The course covers the content of I-100, S-130/190, and a hands-on exercise to meet the NWCG requirements for Red Card certification. The class covers using the Incident Command/Management System in a wildland environment and introduces the student to resource terminology and the common responsibilities associated with wildland fire incidents. Students will learn basic fire behavior factors including basic fire fighting skills and safety, wildland fire behavior, prescription burn management, and the effects of wildland fires on the environment. The class will close with a hands-on wildland fire fighting exercise. Students must be at least 18 years old and in good physical condition. The pack test is included and representatives from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will be on-hand to help individuals get into the system for IDNR. Students will need several forms of identification to complete forms. Fee for the class is $600. The class is led by Tom Richter, a nationally-renowned instructor. Tom has been teaching wildland fire subjects since 1990 and is a Red Card qualified Initial Attack Incident Commander. He is currently serving as a wildland fire trainer and firefighter for the City of Rochelle, Illinois. In the past, he served as a single resource boss for the U.S. Forest Service and the Wyoming State Division of Forestry.
