Art and writing!
Make your mark, and see where it
takes you...!
We want to raise the standards of art
in our school
• This morning is going to consist of three art
workshops and this afternoon is going to
show how art and creative writing inspire
each other.
• The theme of the day is different kinds of
sofas. Today is about having a go and being
imaginative!
What kind of learner
do we want?
Going to start with an exercise that gets you
to think about what sort of learners we really
want.
Where can art help with this?
Art develops spiritual values and contributes a
wider understanding to the experience of life,
which helps to build a balanced personality.
(The National Curriculum, p116)
Art still needs structure, there needs to be a careful
balance between freedom and control!
APPRECIATION OF RESOURCES! CHILDREN HAVING
RESPECT!
Progression of skills
• The progression of skills shows the skills that
should be covered in art.
• At the end of each workshop I want you to
highlight and discuss the skills that have been
met, getting to know the skills for your year
group.
• Hampshire work examples for standards
expected. We want to be able to see progression
in our school.
Story – Our Big Blue Sofa by Tim
Hopgood
Every day brings a new adventure for
Jessy and Tom and their big blue
sofa. One day they are underwater
explorers on a big blue submarine,
the next they are flying high above
the clouds in a big blue hot air
balloon. Sometimes they travel by
big blue taxicab and sometimes they
bounce on a big blue trampoline.
Then, one day, the big blue sofa
breaks! Can a brand new sofa ever
be as much fun?
• Art is all about promoting the use of
imagination, letting go and experimenting!
These are not finished pieces, just have a go!
• This is what we want you to do today, so you
can model this to the children.
• Be bold, daring and unique!
• Spark their imagination!
Begin art with reading
the dot!
For anyone who has been
afraid to express themselves
- from a child in art class to
an adult whose fear has shut
down a long-held dream.
The Dot is there to remind us
all to...... "Make your mark,
and see where it takes you."

Group Tasks!
• You have 1 hour
• Use your skills from this morning (you’ll need to prove you
have done this later by referring to the progression of skills
booklet)
• Create a picture with the theme ‘what could your sofa
become?’
• Think of a name for your piece – be creative!
• Ensure your piece includes the skills your year group need to
be meeting.
• You WILL be doing some writing! (You’ll be told your writing
focus by LR or EF once you’ve started)
• (While you’re doing this…key skills)
Evaluation
• Can you evaluate your own/others work using
art vocabulary?
• Have a go at levelling your team’s piece of
writing.
• Share levels.
• What do you think about the writing you
created?
ACTION RESEARCH!
Art/Writing/Learning Behaviours
• In year teams
• Plan a 2-day art project for this half term!
• MUST have same structure as English/maths lessons: LO / SC /
Guided Sessions are non-negotiable!
• Plan in RRRR assessment opportunities
• Produce a piece of writing – to be compared with the
children’s recent pieces
• Choose an area your year group are weaker at (e.g.
persuasion texts)
• Focus on one key artist and/or refer to a picture book
• OUTCOMES: Piece of writing & Piece of artwork
• EF & LR will be monitoring the outcomes (looking at work and
pupil conferencing)
