WehavetwoSpecialInterestGroups(SIGs)formed:1)Psychiatric
Consultation-LiaisonAdvancedNursingPracticeSIG;and2)
PsychiatricMentalHealthPolicy.IknowtherearemoreSIGsin
themaking,andIlookforwardtothose.
Groupsareworkingonwhitepapersandexecutivesummariesto
disseminateourknowledge.

AsyouknowitissummerinAustralia,andtheendoftheyearbrings
changesaswellasaperiodwheremanynurseshavevacations.Hospital
managementaimforJanuarytobealowactivityperiod,however,inmy
experience,workingasaPCLNoverJanuarydoesnotresemblelow
activity.Whilethepredominantimage(andIwouldsaymisrepresentationof
theholidayseason)isthateveryoneisoutenjoyingfamilyandfriends,itis
aparticularlyvulnerabletimeforthosewithmentalhealthproblemswho
maybelonelyandstressed.Addingtothis,theirprofessionalsupports
maybeonvacationleavingthemisolatedandvulnerable.Ialwaysnoticean
increaseinpost-suicideattemptpresentationstogeneralhospitalsatthis
timeoftheyear.IusuallyworkJanuarybutthisyearwasunusualforme.I
finishedworkinginmyfull-timeroleasaPCLNafter39yearsworkingfull
timeinpublichealth.IleftthehospitalonDecember24leavingmy
colleaguestorespondtotheholiday“lowactivityperiod.”
