Zumtobel Symposium A Light Less Ordinary… A LightMax Topic, LessMustermann, Ordinary date 1 A Light Less Ordinary During his landmark address*1 in 2006, Professor Peter Boyce*2 stated that : Current lighting practice is justified by the need to ensure good visibility and avoid visual discomfort. Lighting can be classified as bad, indifferent and good. Providing good visibility and avoiding visual discomfort are actions necessary to provide indifferent lighting but are not sufficient to guarantee good lighting. We need to educate the purchasers and users of lighting about its benefits beyond visibility and visual comfort. *1 The Trotter Patterson Memorial Lecture, created in 1951 to commemorate two distinguished past Presidents of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Alexander Trotter (President 1917-1920) and Sir Clifford Paterson (1928). *2 Ph.D., FSLL, FIESNA, Past Professor Emeritus at The Lighting Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and one of the world’s foremost lighting researchers.
