Speaking notes The following suggestions and info-bites are important pieces of information for your students to know about QUT cite|write. Your communication of this information to your students would greatly facilitate access to the materials and appropriate use of the resource. What students need to know: Key points All commencing students are entitled to a free copy of the booklet (collected at Library Helpdesks on presentation of a current student ID). The booklet can also be downloaded (PDF) online, or can be purchased from QUT Bookshops (cost $8.00). The booklet provides a general overview about referencing, citing and writing only. Students must refer to the online style guides for examples in each style. Students can access all the materials online (for viewing, printing and download). The website is the main channel of information for any changes or amendments to styles, and additional learning resources. The QUT cite|write booklet is a general overview of elementary referencing, citing and writing fundamentals - specific examples of referencing and citing styles are found in each of the online style guides for QUT APA, QUT Harvard, QUT Numbered and QUT Legal. 2. All materials are available online for viewing, printing and download. The website is fully accessible for students using assisted technologies. 3. Copies of the booklet are available for purchase from QUT Bookshops, although there is no advantage to staff in having a copy in this format. 4. The booklet has been designed with a pocket in the back cover where students may collect guides and templates over their period of study. 5. CONSISTENCY: Students, unless otherwise advised, typically follow the styles depicted in QUT cite|write. If your referencing and citing requirements differ from those represented in QUT cite|write, please advise your students to avoid undue confusion and concern for students. The QUT [name of style] guide is here:.......................................... Help fix their HICUPs! QUT cite|write speaking notes About the referencing/citing styles 1. QUT cite|write presents the 4 main styles used at QUT. It is not intended to be used as a definitive guide but rather to provide an easy introduction to students in the basic principles and practices of academic referencing and writing. 2. Each style represented in QUT cite|write precisely conforms to the authoritative standard published by each governing group or organisation without variation, modification or interpretation. 3. Thus, QUT cite|write provides students and staff with normative and authoritative rules to apply. Any anomalistic course/unit requirements need clear and consistent communication to those students concerned. 4. The use of "QUT" before each style name in the QUT cite|write resources is applied to make an association to the University's expectations of the use of each of the styles as standard and is not an indicator of a QUT "version" or variation of the original and standard style. QUT APA. The style guide and examples are based on the standards developed and maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA), and published in their Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th ed (2009). QUT Harvard. The style guide and examples are based on the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS), 16th Edition. QUT Numbered (Vancouver). The style guide and examples are based on the numbered style prescribed by the National Library of Medicine/NLM (as of 2011). QUT Legal. The style guide and examples are based on the QUT's Written Assessment in the Law School (WALS) which is the style to be used by all undergraduate students for all formal legal writing in the School of Law.
