Information about the educational modules
Introduction
For our final paper in our last year of high school we, Loïs and Eline, decided to do a Worldschool
assignment because we thought that would be quite interesting. Continuously, we had to create
about 24 lessons and this is how we ended up making the five educational modules that are now in
front of you. These educational modules are very suitable for underprivileged children in the
Philippines because of the following reasons.
Firstly, the lessons are very informative and while making them, we kept it in mind that most of the
children lack the basic educational background. Mainly, the children learn much about ‘Health,
Nutrition and Personal Hygiene’, because those are the themes that are very useful to the children in
their everyday life. The lessons also improve the children’s understanding of the English language
and some lessons even teach the children the basics of mathematics.
Secondly, the lessons are very creative because it was pointed out to us that otherwise the children
will have trouble paying attention. For that reason we have made lessons that are definitely not
boring and just theoretical. Instead, we made several games and creative assignments to ensure that
the information comes across in a creative way.
Structure of the modules
We have divided the lessons into 5 educational modules. These modules all start with a short video
clip that introduces the children to the subject of the module. When the children have watched it,
the teacher should repeat the information that the children have heard and then create an
opportunity for them to ask questions about the subject or about English words and sentences they
did not understand. Then, in each module, the children do some creative activities and play a few
games that allow the children to have fun and learn important information at the same time. And
finally, at the end of each module, the children participate in a quiz that will make it possible for
them to show to other children and to the teacher what they have learned. The teacher will also be
able to see if all students have understood everything.
Topics of the modules
As we mentioned earlier, we have made 5 educational modules and the information in these
modules is all related to ‘Health, Nutrition and Personal Hygiene’. But for each module we chose a
specific topic, so the children will get a closer look at it and will learn more about that specific topic.
Module 1
-
Healthy nutrition
This module teaches the children about healthy nutrition and also about the nutrition table.
When we were doing research into healthy nutrition, we discovered that children in the
Philippines mainly watch television commercials that spread the idea that unhealthy food
makes you happy. Therefore this module also gets rid of that kind of reasoning.
2
Module 2
-
This module teaches the children why and how they have to brush their teeth. When we
were doing our research, we discovered that many organizations already set up projects to
teach children this, but considering the fact that it is very important, this modules also brings
that information to the children’s attention.
Module 3
-
Bacteria and mathematics
In this module the basics of mathematics are taught to children and they learn about
bacteria. These subjects are mostly combined so the children learn about both at the same
time.
Module 5
-
Hygiene
This module teaches the children why and when hygiene is very important. Mainly when it
comes to activities such as using band-aids and washing your hands.
Module 4
-
Brushing teeth
Summarizing module
This module mainly summarizes the other four and also adds some new information every
now and then. For example, the children learn more about physical activity and why that is
important.
Final word
We hope these modules contain information that lives up to your expectations. We really enjoyed
making these lessons for you and we hope the volunteers in the Philippines will find them to be very
useful, creative and informative.
3
Module 1
In this module the children will learn about ‘the nutrition table’ and they will be taught about healthy
food and drinks.
Lesson 1: Short introduction video and information
This video will introduce the children to the subjects and it will also improve their English. When the
children have watched the video, the teacher should allow them to ask questions about words or
sentences they did not understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q413VcqOlyU
Continuously, repeat for the children the information they heard in the video.
Which is:
-
Humans eat food because we need energy to do the things we have to do.
Humans need carbohydrates. They rapidly give us energy.
Humans need a little fat. This slowly give us energy. But don’t eat too much fat, or you will
become fat. This happens because our body stores the fat, when we eat too much of it.
Humans need proteins. They help us to grow and help our body to recover from wounds.
Humans need vitamins and minerals. They keep our body healthy and fight diseases.
And most importantly, humans need one and half liter of water every day. Water keeps our
body clean and helps digestion.
Lesson 2: Game nutrition table
Information for the teacher:
This is an educational game in which the children can learn about healthy food.
The teacher makes the following circle (out of paper, on a big piece of paper or on a blackboard). The
children get the different kinds of food cards and they can put them on the right place on the
blackboard or paper.
There is also food which shouldn’t be in the circle, because it is unhealthy food. The children have to
place this on the ‘garbage place’.
To make it a contest: for every card that is put in the right place, the child gets one point. But for
every card that is put in the wrong place, they lose one point. Where the cards are supposed to be
put, is shown on the picture below.
When the game is finished the teacher should evaluate with the children about what they did right
and what went wrong. Perhaps the winner can get a little reward.
4
Draw just the surroundings and the names of the categories of this circle on a big piece of paper or
on a blackboard:
Vitamins &
Minerals
Carbohydrates
Water
Proteins
Fat & Oil
Draw this next to circle:
Garbage Place
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
5
Lesson 3: Nutrition table quartet
This game will teach the children what sorts of food belong in the categories of the nutrition table
and it will also teach them several English words.
Quartet instruction:
You can play this game with 3 or 4 people (Make groups and print the cards multiple times if you
want all the children in your class to play this game). The goal of this game is to have more ‘quartets’
(Sets of cards of the same category) than the other players.
After you’ve shaken the cards, hand every player 4 random cards. Place the other cards as a pile of
cards on the table. The oldest person may then start. He is allowed to ask another player once for a
certain card. For example: ‘Could you give me milk from the category proteins?’. However, he can
only ask another player for a card that belongs to the category proteins when he already has a card
that belongs to that category, such as meat, fish or eggs.
When the player he asked for the card actually has the card, that player must give that card to the
person who asked for it. Continuously, that person may ask one of the players again if he or she has a
certain card.
However, it can also happen that the person who was asked for a certain card, doesn’t have that that
specific card. In that case it is now his turn to ask one of the other players for a card he needs to
complete his quartet. And the person who did not guess right, has to take a card from the pile of
cards on the table.
When the pile of cards is gone, you can simply just not get a card anymore when you’ve asked
another person for a certain card, and he didn’t have it.
When the game is done, the player with most quartets wins. Good luck!
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.

Lesson 4: Quiz
At the end of this module, the children are going to participate in a quiz. In this quiz they can show
what they’ve learned. The teacher will ask the questions and the children may raise their hand when
they think they know the answer to the question. When the teacher gives a child permission to
speak, the child gives his answer. When the child gives a wrong answer, the teacher explains to the
children why the answer is wrong and tells the children what the right answer should have been.
When the child gives the correct answer, the teacher still explains to the other children why it is the
correct answer.
Question 1: Why does our body need food?
-
Food gives us energy to do the things we have to do.
Question 2: Foods that contain carbohydrates or fat both give us energy. But what is the difference
between the processes of turning both foods into energy?
-
Our body rapidly turns food that contains carbohydrates into energy, while our body slowly
turns food that contains fat into energy.
Question 3: What happens when you eat too much fat?
-
You become fat.
Question 4: What kinds nutrition groups does our body need, according to the nutrition table?
-
Carbohydrates, fat and oils, proteins, vitamins and minerals and most importantly, water.
Question 5: What do we need proteins for?
-
They help us grow and help our body heal when we have get injuries.
Question 6: What do we need vitamins and minerals for?
-
They keep our body clean and help it fight diseases.
Question 7: How much water do we have to drink every day and what do we need it for?
-
One and a half liter of water. We need it to keep our body clean and for digestion.
Question 8: Name 3 sorts of bad nutrition.
-
For example: cookies, candy, chocolate and soft drinks.
7
Module 2
In this module the children will learn about ‘brushing teeth’.
Lesson 1: Short introduction video and information
This video will introduce the children to the subject and also improve their English. When the
children have watched the video, the teacher should allow them to ask questions about words or
sentences they did not understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdhptrhn2tM
Continuously, repeat for the children the information they heard in the video.
Which is:
-
You need to brush your teeth twice a day.
This is necessary for a healthy and gorgeous smile.
First make your toothbrush wet.
Then put some toothpaste on your toothbrush. You don’t need a lot.
Brush your teeth inside and out for two minutes.
When you’re done, clean your toothbrush.
Wash away the remainder of the toothpaste with some water, then spit out the water and
you’re done!
Lesson 2: Dental health egg game
For this lesson you need the following objects:
-
1 egg
1 glass of coke (or a different kind of dark soda)
1 pan with water (to boil the egg)
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
This lesson is an experiment that will teach the students about dental health. For this lesson you
need to hard boil an egg before the lesson starts. Then bring some dark soda, for example coca-cola.
Place the egg in the soda for a day. Then take the egg out. It is then discolored (yellow/brown). Take
a toothbrush with a little toothpaste. At this moment you can show them how much toothpaste they
should use. Then brush the egg clean and you will see that it becomes white again.
8
Step 1:
Step 2:
Choose an egg.
Hard-boil the egg.
Step 3:
Step 4:
Peel the egg.
Put the egg in dark soda, for example coke.
Step 5:
Leave the egg in the coke for a day. For everyone’s pleasure, make sure you cover the glass up. It is
best if you do this because the egg will start smelling very bad after a while. If you cover the glass up,
not the entire room will smell like it.
Step 6:
Take the egg out of the glass. The egg is completely brown, instead of white. With a toothbrush and
toothpaste you can clean the egg, so it will become white again. Make sure you do not scrub to hard,
9
because this will damage the egg. This also shows to the children that it is important to learn how
hard they should scrub their teeth, because scrubbing to soft will not clean them enough and
scrubbing to hard will damage their teeth.
Lesson 3: Memory
This game is meant to be played by 2 students. In this game the cards have to lie upside down on a
table. The children can turn around two cards, but if they don’t match they have to put the cards
back. If they do match, they can keep the cards and they get one point. The person with the most
points, wins. We recommend you to paste something behind the images so the students can’t see
what picture is on the card.
The correct matches are:
White teeth
Clean hair
Clean hands
Unhealthy food (hamburger)
Healthy food (fruits and vegetables)
-
Toothbrush
Shampoo
Soap
Unhappy person
Happy person
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
10
Lesson 4: Quiz
At the end of this module, the children are going to participate in a quiz. In this quiz they can show
what they’ve learned. The teacher will ask the questions and the children may raise their hand when
they think they know the answer to the question. When the teacher gives a child permission to
speak, the child gives his answer. When the child gives a wrong answer, the teacher explains to the
children why the answer is wrong and tells the children what the right answer should have been.
When the child gives the correct answer, the teacher still explains to the other children why it is the
correct answer.
Question 1: How much toothpaste do you need per time?
-
Half a centimeter is enough. This is about the size of a pea.
Question 2: How many times do you have to brush your teeth?
-
You have to brush your teeth twice a day.
Question 3: Why is it good to floss?
-
Flossing is good because it cleans the space between your teeth.
Question 4: What happens if you don’t brush your teeth?
-
You get tooth plaque. This can lead to rotting of the teeth.
Question 5: Which substance does toothpaste contain, which is important for your teeth?
-
Fluoride.
Question 6: How many teeth does one person have?
-
32 teeth.
Question 7: If you don’t brush your teeth, there will come a white layer on your teeth. What is this
called?
-
Tooth plaque.
Question 8: How long do you have to brush your teeth?
-
2 minutes.
11
Module 3
In this module the children will learn about ‘hygiene’.
Lesson 1: Short introduction video and information
This video will introduce the children to the subject and also improve their English. When the
children have watched the video, the teacher should allow them to ask questions about words or
sentences they did not understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHwDmjmvTOg
Continuously, repeat for the children the information they heard in the video.
Which is:
-
Brush your teeth twice a day.
When you get a cut, use a band-aid to keep the germs away.
Change your band-aid every day.
Wash your hands before you eat, after you go to the toilet, after playing outside or playing
with your pets.
When food gets stuck between your teeth, floss and you’ll feel good as new.
Hygiene is important to stay healthy and strong.
Lesson 2: Changing hygiene habits
This is a game about changing hygiene habits. In a group the children talk about what their unhealthy
hygiene habits are and try to come up with ways to change these habits. They have to write those
solutions on small cards. After that, every group has to explain to the other students what, in their
opinion, is the best solution to the problem they came up with and why they believe it is the best
solution. Every child gets one card.
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
Lesson 3: Mimes
In this lesson the children will choose an action and mime it until their partner guesses. They must
make a complete and correct English sentence. This way, the children will be able to improve their
English. When they make a mistake, they can correct each other. The children will work in groups of
two children. Every pair will get one table. There are some ideas on the table in the Appendices, but
the children can also use their own ideas and mime them.
 You can find the tables you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
Lesson 4: Hand washing song
In this lesson the children will be taught when they have to wash their hands. This is very important
to know. Just watch the video so you know which gestures the children can make while they are
singing the song.

Module 4
This module mainly focuses on mathematics and it teaches the children about bacteria.
Lesson 1: Short introduction video and information
This video will introduce the children to the subject and also improve their English. When the
children have watched the video, the teacher should allow them to ask questions about words or
sentences they did not understand.

Bacteria multiply every 20 minutes
Bacteria favour warm en musty places
When you start with one bacterium, after 20 minutes you will have 2 bacteria, because 2
times 1 is 2. After 40 minutes you will have 4 bacteria, because 2 times 2 is 4. And after one
hour you will have 8 bacteria because 2 times 4 is 8.
This way you will have 512 bacteria after 3 hours. And after 4 hours you will have 4096
bacteria!
Because of the fact that bacteria multiply rapidly, you should try to keep them away from
you.
Lesson 2: Mathematics with bacteria
Bacteria are very small, but despite of their size very dangerous. You can only see them with a
microscope. Unlike animals and humans, they don’t have babies but they multiply by splitting
themselves in two halves. This way, the number of bacteria can increase very rapidly.
Assignment 1: If you have one bacterium which multiplies in 20 minutes, how many bacteria exist
after 60 minutes?
Answer:
20 minutes
40 minutes
60 minutes
2 bacteria
4 bacteria
8 bacteria
15
Assignment 2: Let the children think about this question: How do you think the number of bacteria
can be reduced?
Answers (examples):
Wash your hands
Brush your teeth
Assignment 3: If you have 3 bacteria which multiply in 20 minutes, how many bacteria are there after
40 minutes?
Answer:
20 minutes
40 minutes
6 bacteria
12 bacteria
Assignment 4: How small do you think a medium size bacterium is?
Answer:
There are many kinds of bacteria, the size is different by every kind. Most bacteria are 1 – 5 μm. This
is about 350 times smaller than a grain of sand.
Assignment 5: If you have 4 bacteria which multiply in 20 minutes, how many bacteria exist after 60
minutes?
Answer:
20 minutes
40 minutes
60 minutes
8 bacteria
16 bacteria
32 bacteria
Lesson 3: Sums
In this lesson the children will be introduced further to mathematics. We will do this by using
cooperative teaching methods and the following list of sums.
10 + 10 =
20 − 20 =
30 + 60 =
70 − 30 =
40 + 20 =
70 − 50 =
70 + 10 =
100 − 90 =
10 + 10 =
70 − 60 =
16
20 + 80 =
60 − 40 =
50 + 30 =
100 − 40 =
60 + 10 =
100 − 10 =
30 + 50 =
40 − 40 =
20 + 30 =
50 − 40 =
30 + 60 =
60 − 50 =
50 + 40 =
80 − 50 =
30 + 70 =
70 − 20 =
30 + 60 =
80 − 40 =
70 + 20 =
70 − 60 =
The teacher makes little cards with sums written on the front and the answers on the back . So for
example the front of a card says: ´30+70=´. The answer, in this case ´100´, is written on the back of
the card.
After the teacher has given one card to every child, the children start walking around the classroom
and when the teacher gives the sign, for example ringing a bell, they pair up. So groups of 2 children
arise.
When two children have found each other, one of them reads out his own sum to the other child.
This child then gives the answer. If this child doesn´t know the answer to the sum, the other child
gives his partner the answer and tries to explain why it is the answer
After a round the teacher notes the scores of every single child on the blackboard. Continuously,
after the teacher has rung the bell 10 times, the child who knew the most answers to the sums wins
the game.
Lesson 4: Toilet Tables
Print the ´Toilet Tables´ poster and encourage the children to practice the tables while they´re using
the toilet. It is possible to give a reward to the first person who knows all of the tables.
 You can find the poster you need to print in the Appendices.
17

Module 5
In this module the children will learn about different aspects from the other modules.
Lesson 1: Short introduction video and information
This video will introduce the children to the subjects and also improve their English. When the
children have watched the video, the teacher should allow them to ask questions about words or
sentences they did not understand.

Germs are tiny organisms, so small you can only see them with a microscope.
Even though they are so small, some can make you sick.
When you cough or sneeze, you should cover your mouth and nose so the germs can’t
spread.
If you don’t do that, your germs can make other people sick.
The best way to protect yourself from germs is to wash your hands.
Eating well is important to stay healthy and fit.
If you eat well, your body will stay strong. The stronger your body is, the better you can keep
germs away.
To stay fit, you also need physical activity for at least one hour a day.
Getting enough sleep not only helps you grow, but it helps your body to stay strong and fight
germs.
Oral hygiene is also important to stay fit.
Flossing and brushing your teeth keeps your mouth healthy and makes that you have a nice
breath.
Lesson 2: Quartet
Quartet instruction:
You can play this game with 3 or 4 people. (Make groups and print the cards multiple times if you
want all the children in your class to play this game). The goal of this game is to have more ‘quartets’
(sets of cards of the same category) than the other players.
After you’ve shaken the cards, hand every player 4 random cards without looking what is on the
card. Place the other cards as a pile of cards on the table. The oldest person may then start. He is
allowed to ask another player once for a certain card. For example: ‘Could you give me soap from the
category washing your hands?’. However, he can only ask another player for a card that belongs to
the category washing your hands when he already has a card that belongs to that category, such as
dirty hands, wash or clean hands.
19
Lesson 3: Keeping a diary
The students have to make a diary in which they write what they eat every day and how much for
one week. After one week, they take their diary to class and evaluate it. The children have to discuss
if the food they ate is healthy and whether it belongs to the ‘Nutrition table’.
 You can find the diaries you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
Lesson 4: Changing food habits
This is a game about changing food habits. In lesson 3 of this module, the children have evaluated
their eating habits. In this lesson, they have to write down what of those habits are bad eating habits.
In a group the children talk about what their unhealthy food habits are and try to come up with ways
to change these habits. They have to write their solutions on small cards. After that, every group has
to explain to the other students what, in their opinion, is the best solution to the problem they came
up with and why they believe it is the best solution.
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
Lesson 5: Memory
This game is meant to be played by 2 students. In this game the cards have to lie upside down on a
table. The children can turn around two cards, but if they don’t match they have to put the cards
back. If they do match, they can keep the cards and they get one point. The person with the most
points, wins. We recommend you to paste something behind the images so the students can’t see
what picture is on the card.
20
The correct matches are:
White teeth
Clean hair
Clean hands
Unhealthy food (hamburger)
Healthy food (fruits and vegetables)
-
Toothbrush
Shampoo
Soap
Unhappy person
Happy person
 You can find the cards you need to print for this game in the Appendices.
Lesson 6: Quiz
At the end of this module, the children are going to participate in a quiz. In this quiz they can show
what they’ve learned. The teacher will ask the questions and the children may raise their hand when
they think they know the answer to the question. When the teacher gives a child permission to
speak, the child gives his answer. When the child gives a wrong answer, the teacher explains to the
children why the answer is wrong and tells the children what the right answer should have been.
When the child gives the correct answer, the teacher still explains to the other children why it is the
correct answer.
Question 1: Can normal people see germs with their bare eyes?
-
