Expectations
We have high expectations of our children and we aim to prepare
them so they can acquire a wide range of experiences and skills.
• This year, among other things, we will be working hard at raising
expectations. As a staff, we believe that if we have high
expectations of behaviour and presentation, this will be reflected
in the quality of work that children produce.
• We will also be working extremely hard on developing our fine
and gross motor skills – including: holding a pencil, cutting,
throwing and catching balls, balancing and coordinating
movements.
Behaviour
We want every child to feel safe and secure at West Acton.
The school has 6 simple rules called the Golden Rules. They are:
• We are gentle
• We are kind and helpful
• We listen
• We are honest
• We work hard
• We look after property
The school focuses on a positive reinforcement approach for all
learners which is achieved
using the following strategies:
• Use of positive praise
• Celebration of good work using stickers, stamps, stars etc.
Behaviour
Your child will be working together with others to promote West Action school
values which are attitudes for life. We will be introducing these values in a
nursery friendly manor.
These are:
• Safe
• Kind
• Respect
• Ambitious
• Reflective
• Inquisitive
• Happy
• Independent
• Collaborative
• Confident
This year we will also introduce the West Acton Superheroes as part of our visible
learning program. These heroes will encourage learning behaviours which the
children will reflect on.
• I am Resilient
• I Take Risks
• I am an Evaluator
• I make Connections
• I Challenge Myself
What will our children be learning?
• We follow the EYFS in Nursery.
• This is a play based curriculum that promotes learning through
experience and exploration.
• Children develop and learn in different ways and at different
rates so we offer a wide range of teaching and learning
experiences that take account of children’s existing knowledge
and interests.
• Our aim is to develop independent learners who are able to
think creatively and imaginatively.
• There are 7 areas of learning and development
– 3 Prime areas- Communication and Language; Physical Development;
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
– 4 Specific areas Literacy; Maths; Understanding the World; and
Expressive Art and Design
• Learning is accessed through a mixture of whole class teaching,
group teaching and 1:1 teaching
Topic overview
• Over the year we focus on a wide range of
skills and topics
• Including: Stories, Numbers, Games, Shapes,
Colours, Growing, Seasons, Weather, Nursery
Rhymes
How else can I help my child’s learning?
• Give lots of real life experience – museum trips (many
are free), tour of London, going shopping and dealing
with money, library trips…
• Talk with your child about things they are interested in,
encourage them to develop their communication by
asking them questions
• Develop areas they find challenging through playing,
ICT and interacting rather than workbooks and extra
work…discovery is an exciting learning tool.
Join in our learning
• If you have just an hour or two free a week, we could really use
your help in:
• Supporting Art/ DT (painting, crafts, sensory)
• Reading to children
• Playing number games with the children
• Accompanying on trips
Anything else?
If you have any concerns
please let any of the nursery staff or
Assistant Head Teacher (Mr Ed Humble) know
straight away
so we can respond
sooner rather than later.
You can see us at the end of each day or ask the office to make
an appointment for a longer meeting.
