HPC for hotels
description
In the first place, co-generation units are not renewable energy facilities but they have one of the
highest efficiencies in the sector of energy generation and can run by fossil fuels but also by
wood or biogas. Due to the combination of heat and power generation they reach a systemefficiency up to 90 % related to the primary energy carrier.
This technology enables a higher level of independency. For this reason more than 40 DAV(Deutscher Alpenverein - German alp association) hostels use this way of energy generation.
But not only isolated island and decentralized systems use the co-generation units but also
conventional households, trade, hotel and restaurant industry. The technology is especially
applicable with a great demand of heat which often occurs by hotels with a swimming pool or
sauna.
The Hotel Eggensberger, which is sited at Hopfen am See (Germany), use this way of energy
generation and supplies a part of its own demand. Further electricity is supplied by water
generated power system. With an additional heat recovery plant at the swimming pool and
additional insulation the Bio-Hotel saves in sum of all facilities 40 % of its energy demand and
reduces its CO2-emissions by 50 %. As this example shows, it exist a large potential of energy
efficiency and application of alternative and efficiency energy generation methods.
Municipalities have possibilities to motivate or support companies/hotels to establish such
technologies. It can be reached by awareness raising, or with direct incentives. Most important
are successful examples in the region.
