Team Captain
Job Description
The Special Olympic team captain is a competing athlete responsible for instilling an
atmosphere of good sportsmanship for the coaches and athletes at all practices and
competitions. The team captain works with the head coach on practice sessions and
provides guidance to fellow teammates as needed throughout the season.
Responsibilities
 Assist the coach with local practices
 Along with the coaches, set an example of good sportsmanship
 Coach fellow athletes on good sportsmanship
 Attend the event coaches’ meetings (when it does not conflict with warm-up
times) with the head coach
 Represent the team at the pre-game captain’s meeting with the officials
(depending on sport)
Qualifications
 A competing athlete
 Attends practice regularly
 Sets a good example of sportsmanship and attitude
 Can assist other athletes with sportsmanship issues
 Can serve as a good leader
 Gets along well with other athletes
 Has a good working relationship with the coach
 Remains calm under pressure
