An Invitation to the 2016 International Symposium
on Eastern Culture and Design Philosophy

Dear Sir/Madam:
The 2nd Oriental Design Forum& 2016 International Symposium on Eastern Culture and Design
Philosophy, which is initiated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and co-hosted by International
Design Association, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Southeast University and Dong Hua
University , will be held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University on 5-8 April, 2016. In time of the
university's 120th anniversary, on behalf of the host and the organizing committee, I would like to
sincerely invite you to attend the symposium.
Eastern design philosophy is a systematic pattern based on traditional eastern culture. In order to
address theoretical and practical problems in the design field, every design scholar needs to
consider how to maintain the traditional culture as well as present the individual identity. Till now
many scholars have studied the integration of eastern culture and design discipline but most of
their research results still remain preliminary, fragmentary and lack of systematization. The 2016
International Symposium on Eastern Culture and Design Philosophy is an important part of the
2nd Oriental Design Forum. This symposium will favor deep discussions about how to combine
eastern culture& philosophy with design, establish the theoretical system of eastern design and
promote the city construction of Shanghai as being the City of Design and International Center of
Technological Innovation.
Shanghai, known as the "Paris of the Orient", is one of the most prosperous city in China, it also
attracts and gathers lots of design talents in China. Besides the symposium, the forum will
organize a series of events such as the establishment ceremony of the international expert
committee of the design discipline, the launch ceremony of the Institute for National Park and
World Heritage of the World Natural Heritage Protection Center of Housing Construction
Department, the national park and world heritage forum, the establishment ceremony of the

Science and Arts Committee of International Design Association, the launch seminars of Design
Theory and Practice Series, the opening ceremony of the design exhibition from SJTU's teachers
and students, the design scholar forum, the PhD student forum as well as the alumni forum. Heads
of the relevant ministries and organizers, academicians, members of the subject consultative group
of the State Council as well as the design professionals and scholars from both home and abroad
will attend this forum. The aim of the forum is to encourage sharing of ideas and resources so as to
create a worldwide platform with strong academic competence and social influence. Let's all work
together to develop the Oriental Design Forum.
