For Immediate Release May 1, 2013 LCC Forensics Team Takes 2nd at Northwest Championships Lower Columbia College placed 2nd overall at the Northwest Community College Championship hosted by Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA on April 26th and 27th. Community Colleges in the Northwest Forensics Conference from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana are eligible to compete at the tournament. The Fighting Smelt were bolstered by outstanding performances in both debate and individual speaking events. LCC accumulated more overall points in debate events than all others schools. The team competed in two types of debate. In parliamentary two person team debate the Smelt took three of the top four spots. The team of sophomore Dessa Cole of Kelso and freshman Tanner Wiley received a gold honors after a three win and one loss preliminary record before walking over another LCC team in their gold/silver round. Wiley was also recognized as the 4th best speaker in the event. The team of sophomore J. Grant Wylie of Longview, and freshman Jessie Quick of Kelso also received gold honors after a three win and one loss preliminary record. They defeated a team from Clark College on a 3-0 decision in their gold/silver round. Wylie was honored as the fifth place speaker in the event. The team of sophomore King Zeh-Rahk of Bellevue and Jessica Clark of Kelso received silver honors after a two win and two loss preliminary record. They were walked over by a higher seeded LCC team in their gold/silver round. In International Public Debate Association one on one Lincoln-Douglas style debate, LCC was led by J Wylie and Quick. Quick received silver honors after a three win and 1 loss preliminary record. He defeated a competitor from Clark College in his bronze round on a 2-1 decision before losing to a competitor from Mount Hood Community College in the gold/silver round. Wylie was the top seed after a four win and one loss preliminary record but lost to a debater from Mount Hood in the bronze round. Wylie was also recognized as the top public debate speaker at the tournament. In addition, though not receiving medal honors, Cole was recognized as the 10th place speaker and T. Wiley was awarded 7th. In speaking events the team was led by Cole who placed 3rd in Editorial Commentary, 4th in Informative Speaking, and 5th in Extemporaneous Speaking. J. Wylie placed 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking and 5th in Editorial Commentary. T. Wiley placed 4th in Extemporaneous Speaking and 4th in Prose Interpretation. Quick placed 4th in Impromptu Speaking. Zeh-Rahk placed 4th in Poetry Interpretation. Sophomore Corey Toney of Longview placed 6th in Impromptu Speaking. When the smoke cleared the Fighting Smelt had accumulated the 2nd most points overall in speaking events.
