NOTES ON REGISTRATION OF FOOD PREMISES
Who needs to register?
1. If you regularly offer food for sale i.e. for one day a week or more, you must tell WRS about the places where you
store, sell, distribute or prepare food. Food premises include restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops, supermarkets, staff
canteens, nurseries, residential homes, warehouses, guest houses, delivery vehicles, pleasure craft, market and other
stalls, mobile food units, ice cream vans, etc.
2. If you use vehicles for your food business in connection with a shop or warehouse you only need to tell WRS how
many vehicles you have. If you have one or more vehicles but no permanent premises, you must tell WRS where
they are normally kept.
4. Seasonal businesses should give the dates between which they will be open each year.
5. The only current exemption to Regulation 852/2004 is childminders. However, if you run an occasional event where
you handle, prepare, store and serve food, such as church, school or village fairs you do not need to register.. If you
are not sure whether or not to register, please contact WRS for advice.

Time Period for Registration
7. You must register at least 28 days before you start trading.
Approved Premises
8. If you supply products of animal origin, other than by retail, you will also be subject to Approval under Regulation
(EC) 853/2004 in addition to your general registration with WRS. If you are unsure whether the whole, or part of, your
food operations may need to be Approved, please contact WRS on 01905 822799 for further advice.
How to Register
9. Registration is free and cannot be refused. Please complete all sections which apply to your business and give all
the information requested. The registration form should be posted (or e-mailed) to the address on the front of this
form, If the form is sent to the wrong address your registration will not take effect until it is received by WRS.
If you have more than one premise, you need to register each address separately.
What happens to the information given on the form?
10. Details are entered on a Register of Food Businesses. A letter or email will be sent confirming your registration
has been received.
11. A register containing the name of the food business operator, trading name and address of the food business, type
of food business, is available to the general public. Details of other information provided will not be publicly available
subject to provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Data Protection Act 1998.
12. Registration also gives WRS an up-to-date list of food premises in the County to enable officers (Environmental
Health and Trading Standards) to visit at appropriate intervals. The frequency of the visits will depend on the risk
rating of the business in line with the Food Standards Agency Code of Practice.
Food Hygiene Rating Scheme [FHRS]
11. WRS is part of the Food Standards Agency National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Your risk rating (score) will be
published on a national website at www.food.gov.uk/ratings. Ratings are uploaded weekly.
Changes
12. Any changes to the registration details you have supplied must be notified to WRS, e.g. a change of food business
operator, a change of activities carried out in relation to food, closing of business, change of address at which mobile
premises are kept. You should advise us before the change occur, preferably in writing and no later than 28 days after
the change has occurred.
13. If the ownership of the business changes, the new food business operator must complete a new application form.
