Ball familiarisation is an opportunity to introduce the tennis ball to the children and let them experience using and playing with it
The aim of this lesson is to let the children explore the tennis ball. It involves playing games that allow the children to become familiar with the ball and how it moves.
The most important concept to get across to the children is control of the ball. Explain control of the ball to the children as 'looking after the ball', keeping it close and making sure you have
control of it.
Handling the ball, moving with it and reacting to collect it should be the focus of the lesson

Warm Up
The Ball is Hot
Duration : 5 - 10
Give each child a tennis ball
Ask the children to move around an area with the ball
They must not hold the ball for more than 2/3 seconds (it is hot), before they roll it away from themselves
Once they have rolled it they must move quickly to collect it
Keep repeating the process of rolling and collecting the ball whilst moving around the area
Teaching Points
Look where you are going
Move into space
Move quickly
Be careful of other balls
Build up speed gradually
Progression
Teaching Points
Ask the children to move in different ways e.g. Jumping, skipping, hopping
Coordination and Movement
Around the Body
Duration : 5 - 10
The class are to work in pairs with 1 tennis ball between them
Ask the pairs to stand back to back in a space with one of the children holding the tennis ball
The children should pass the ball around their bodies to each other
On the signal 'Change' the children must change the direction the ball is being passed in
Teaching Points
Be ready
Communicate with partner
Build up speed gradually
Twist the body at the hips to pass and receive the ball
Progression
Teaching Points
Pass ball over head and back between legs
To make activity harder
Move the pairs further apart
To make activity easier
Slow the activity down

Coordination and Movement
Cannon ball
Duration : 5 - 10
Split the class into teams of 4/5
Two teams play against each other on a small court
Set up enough courts (shown in the diagram) for all the groups
The aim of the game is for a team to get a large ball, which starts in the middle of the court, onto their opponents line without touching it
Give the children soft balls to throw at the large ball in order to move it to their opponents line
The children can collect balls thrown by their opponents and throw them at the large ball
Every time a team manages to knock the large ball over their opponents line they receive 1 point
Restart the game by replacing the ball in the centre of the court
Play the game up to 5 points
To make activity harder
Make the court larger
To make activity easier
Make the court smaller

Teaching Points
Aiming of throws
Underarm throws
Children are not allowed in the court area
Use soft balls to throw at the big ball
Diagram
Game
Change the Height
Duration : 5 - 10
Set up lots (15 to 20) different sized and height nets around the playing area in spaces
Nets can be made from Benches, Chairs, Sticks across cones etc
The children work in pairs with 1 ball between them
The aim of the activity is for a pair to find a free net and throw the ball back and forth over it
Once a pair have thrown and caught the ball successfully 5 times they can move to a different net and repeat the activity
Keep repeating the activity moving around the different nets
Teaching Points
The ball is only allowed to bounce once before it is caught
What effect does the size of net have on your play?
Cooperate with your partner
Work together
Is there space for you to work?
Hands ready to catch, eyes on the ball
Diagram
To make activity harder
Increase the number of successful catches that have to be made
To make activity easier
Reduce the number of successful catches that have to be made
Analysis
Describe what they have done or seen others doing
Discuss with the children what they have done or saw other people doing:
Ask the children to have a go at the activity
After the activity ask the children to explain what they did
Encourage the children to use key teaching points when describing what they did
Ask the children to describe what they saw other people doing
Encourage the children to use key teaching points when describing what they saw
Encourage them to highlight good things they saw
Warm Down
Circle Stretch
Duration : 5
Split the class into groups of 6
Give each group 1 ball and ask them to form a small circle
Each child should stand with their feet shoulder width apart and reach down so their hands hang near the ground
The ball is then passed around the group - children should roll it around the circle
Ask the children to roll the ball around the circle 3 times in one direction and then 3 times in the opposite direction
Plenary
How does the ball move?
Teaching Points
Encourage children to keep their legs straight
Gradually decrease intensity
Teaching Points
