SCIENCE AT TARRAGON THEATRE
As the first play of Tarragon’s upcoming 2016-2017 season, The Watershed focuses on
environmental protection, which is very relevant to the next generation of science students and
teachers. The Watershed promotes environmental literacy and encourages environmental
activism and its integration into everyday life.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL SEE
The Watershed follows a documentary theatre artist as she writes a play about the future of
Canada’s natural resources. Annabel and her family travel across the country to find out why the
Federal Government has cut the funding for the Experimental Lakes Area, a project that
conducts fresh water research. Annabel’s dedication leads her to discover a political agenda that
highlights the tension between capitalism and environmental advocacy. Through a series of
interviews and research, Annabel begins to unravel a complex political puzzle.
THE WATERSHED AND CURRICULUM
The Watershed will enrich student learning by supporting the science and
environmental science Ontario Curriculum Guidelines. For example,
students should be able to:
Grade 9 Academic Science- Unit B. Biology: Sustainable Ecosystems
B1. assess the impact of human activities on the sustainability of
terrestrial and/or aquatic ecosystems, and evaluate the effectiveness of
courses of action intended to remedy or mitigate negative impacts Grade 11 Environmental Science- Unit B: Scientific Solutions to
Contemporary Environmental Challenges
B1. analyse social and economic issues related to an environmental
challenge, and how societal needs influence scientific endeavours related
to the environment
