FOOD GUIDELINES In its effort to create a more sustainable environment that will promote good eating habits that are essential to student success, Vanier College has adopted these Food Guidelines. Scope: Respecting the College’s ban on fried foods*, energy drinks, water bottles and sodas**, these Guidelines apply to all sectors and activities where food is provided or available to members of the Community. This includes food suppliers and providers such as the Cafeteria contractor, Vanier Coop as well as vending machines. It also includes food sold at fundraising activities and during special events. External rentals are not subject to these guidelines. Roles and responsibility: The Coordinator of Student Services (Student Activities) is responsible for the application and revision of these Guidelines. Purpose: To create an environment that promotes and sustains healthy eating habits. Roles and Responsibilities: Vanier College is responsible for: - Collaborating with its partners to make sure that information is readily available concerning allergens contained in certain foods; - Ensuring that all contracts related to food services reflect and respect these Guidelines; - Ensuring that areas assigned for food consumption are attractive cleaned regularly, accessible and well lit; - Ensuring that all students and staff have the opportunity to organize their schedule in order to have sufficient time periods allocated for meals within their schedules; - Making sure that the Cafeteria provider and Vanier Coop respect these Guidelines; - Supporting the Cafeteria food providers by providing necessary equipment and maintaining these equipment; - Determining in collaboration with the Cafeteria service provider and Vanier Coop the daily hours of operation; - Chairing the Cafeteria User’s committee meetings; - Revising the Guidelines every 3 years. Food providers are responsible for: • - Ensuring the availability and promotion of a wide variety of healthy, fresh and nutritious foods that contribute to healthy eating habits at competitive prices; - Collaborating with their partners to make sure that information is readily available concerning allergens contained in certain foods; - Reducing or eliminating the usage of salt and refined sugars in all food preparation; - Favouring the use of products that are rich in fiber and low in fat contents; - Offering a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables; - Ensuring that local food suppliers are favoured; - Giving information about the nutritional value of different foods; - Offering healthy food choices in vending machines; - Eliminating as much as possible all foods that have low nutritional values; - Providing to the College a list of menus and of all foods that will be sold as well as their prices (Cafeteria contractor and Vanier COOP); Definition of Food provider: Food providers include the Cafeteria contractor, Vanier Coop (Jake’s Café), any department or student group that sells food for fundraising purposes or during special events as well as the VCSA (Vanier College Student Association). Rental contracts, other than external, are also subject to these Guidelines. *Exceptionally, chips are allowed to be sold even though they are considered to be fried foods. **Sodas: Soft drinks such as Coke or Pepsi. These Guidelines are under the responsibility of the Director of Services for Students. Approved by Management Executive Committee June 21, 2017.
