Our Open Night on May 23rd was a well attended informative evening where Year 8 boys along with their parents and
family visited over twenty classrooms and experienced the
foundation of a successful education for boys.
We welcome to our staff one of our
Old Boys, Karl Lowe. Karl has returned from professional rugby in
France and has joined our rugby
development programme working
with our Year 9 & Year 10 Rugby
Academies and assisting with the
coaching of our U15 Rugby Team.

Hastings Boys’ High School landed the big award
for secondary school sport taking out the Junior
Sports Team of the Year with our 1st XV Rugby
team, the only rugby team to win the award since
it was introduced in 2006. Pictured are Mr Robertson and Mr Small along with the Konica Minolta representative at the prize giving ceremony.
Again Hastings Boys’ High School hosted 1,500 junior 7’s
players in the annual Barefoot 7’s tournament. One of the
largest tournaments of its type in the world and saw over
150 teams compete in 7’s rugby. Well done to our junior
academy boys who did a great job refereeing the thirty
games on at any one time.

Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XV
The Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XV has made a strong start to the season, going unbeaten in its first eight games. The preseason fixtures got
underway with a resounding 53-0 victory over Kelston Boys’ High School
which was then followed by a three match in eight days tour of Auckland. The first game on tour was a hard fought 22-13 victory over King’s
College followed by a comprehensive 43-5 win over the New Zealand
Secondary Schools champions Mount Albert Grammar School at Eden
Park. The last match on the tour was against a very challenging St Kentigern’s team which saw Hastings fight hard for their 15-5 win. The team
then entered the Hurricanes Tranzit festival with a bit of momentum and
produced three comprehensive victories over Wairarapa College 46-7, St
Pats Town 106-7 and Rongotai College 55-0. Their last game to date was
against Lindisfarne College where the team started the game slowly but
hit their straps soon after halftime to record a comprehensive 75-0 win.
The team now looks forward to the Super 8 competition where their
first game is against Palmerston North Boys’ High School on June 10 th at
Hastings Boys’ High School.
Big Sing 2017
Big Sing is the premier school choral competition in Australasia and despite starting two months later than our
competitors, Hastings Boys’ High School was able to field a choir in the 2017 Hawkes Bay Regional Competition.
The choristers prepared and sang three compositions in
the categories of: Classical Song: Coro Di Zingari e Canzone by Verdi (The Anvil Chorus), NZ Composition, Red, Red
Rose by Havelock North Composer, Stephen Lange and
an ‘Own Choice’ Composition Homeward Bound by Marta Keen. The competition was fierce and 2017 probably
had the most outstanding level for some years for the
Hawkes Bay. Hastings Boys’ High School represented
with pride and maturity and were a strong crown favourite, particularly our version of Verdi’s Anvil Chorus.
However, 2017 was a rare year of excellence and the adjudicator only had eyes for the all female choirs with no
male choirs placing. Despite this Hastings Boys’ High

School would have been pleased to see their new Choir
Director, José Aparicio, take out three of the four possible awards, including: Outstanding Choir Director and we
are sure that with another 12 months under our belts that 2018 promises to be a good year for Hastings Boys’
High School Choirs.

Director of Hockey at Hastings Boys’ Dean Hulls believes that this is potentially the most talented group of
hockey students the school has had for quite a while. There are numerous Hawke’s Bay Representative age
group players in the team. The Junior Hockey Academy at school ensures that these players receive more
development opportunities than at any other school in Hawke’s Bay.
