Color Guard - Putnam Public School

Putnam High School Colorguard
Teacher: Ms. Fadrowski
E-mail: [email protected]
Phone: (860) 963-6905 Ext. 3025
Level: College Prep: Fall 2014
Philosophy and Goals:
1. Every guard member will work to develop his/her individual music skills.
2. Band is a group effort. We will work together as a team to achieve our goals.
3. We will work to develop healthy playing habits.
4. Members will be exposed to many different genres of music and learn to appreciate all types.
5. We will work to become responsible and mature leaders within the Putnam community.
Course Description/Objectives:
This course will give students an opportunity to learn about music through performance and study of marching band and
guard literature. Through the rehearsal process, the major topics that will be covered are:
1. Good technique while spinning
2. Explore personal creativity and expression
3. Use aesthetics through the learning of choreography
4. Participate in a variety of public performances
Everyday Required Materials:

Drill, flag and pencil
Expectations:
1. Follow all rules of the student handbook.
2. Follow all rules in the Band Code of Conduct.
3. Students need to be in class everyday and on time.
4. Every student will come to class prepared with all materials and assignments.
5. Ask questions!!
6. Take pride in your personal accomplishments and show support for your peers and yourself.
7. Being 15 minutes early to all after school functions. Remember: if you are early you are on time, if you are on
time, you are late.
Grading:
Daily Grade-Attendance/Tardy/Participation/Behavior: 30%
Quizzes/Homework: 20%
Exams/Tests: 10%
Performances: 40%
Absences:
All competition is mandatory and required!! Students may be excused from a performance if there is an
UNAVOIDABLE conflict. Parent note must be provided no less than 3 weeks in advance!! If a student does not show
up to a competition, a grade of zero will be given.
All after-school rehearsals are mandatory. If there are sports/club conflicts those should be addressed. Failer to do so
will resort to lowering of the attendance grade for this class. I am a strong believer in communication, please
communicate with me. Do not tell me the day before a function! All students have been aware of the calendar for many
weeks now, please mark the dates the first day of school!
If you are absent from school and/or are sick please e-mail me or call me. A no call/no show will resort to lowing of
your grade. COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, AND COMMUNICATE!!!!!
Tardy:
School policy states, you must be on time to class before the bell rings every day. If a student is not in the room by the
time the bell rings they will be marked tardy, which in return will result in a 15 minute detention with Ms. F, and will
resort in lowing of the daily grade. Four tardies, or no show will result in an office write-up.
Extra Help:
It is the student’s responsibility to take the initiative in getting extra help when needed. There will be many times
throughout the school year where sectionals will be lead outside rehearsals, I encourage all to attend. Also, please do not
hesitate to come and see me for extra help!! Please contact me via e-mail, on the website or personally.
Late Work:
For every day an assignment is late, 10 points will be taken off the final grade. If a quiz is missed, the student must make
it up the next day they are present to class.
Cell Phones/Electronic Devices:
Any cell phones/electronic devices that are seen in class or make a sound during class, will be confiscated and will be
returned to the student at the end of the class period. The use of cellular/electronic devices are prohibited by the
school handbook.
Cubbies:
Every student will be assigned a cubby where they may leave their shoes and supplies. These must be clean throughout
the entire school year.
Fundraisers
All students are REQUIRED to participate in ALL fundraisers throughout the year. Students must fundraise for band
trips to defer the costs throughout the years here at PHS! If you are a student with financial assistance, my expectation is
for you to be first to sign up when asked for volunteers throughout the year.
Daily Grade: Participation and being prepared for class is the main grade for this class and will be part of your daily
grade. Each student will receive 10 points as part of their daily grade. It is broken down as follows:
Daily Grade Breakdown

Super Fridays:
Super Fridays are on a Friday of a home football game, where students meet in the band room after school and rehearse
together up until the football game. This is mandatory for all students. I ask for parents to either pack a dinner or have
students bring a few dollars to chip in for pizza. (Please see calendar for dates)
