Train commuter figures show
rise in usage remains on track
Stratford’s £9million Parkway up 30 per cent, but Warwick Parkway down
THE number of people
catching the train to and from
south Warwickshire is rising.
Figures produced by the Office of
Rail and Road last week show that
while usage figures at Stratford’s
town centre station are down
slightly by 0.1per cent to 994,070,
the number of passengers getting on
and off at the £9million Parkway on
the outskirts of town rose by 31 per
cent to 83,228 passengers.
The cost of car parking is thought
to be a factor.
At Warwick Parkway, usage has
fallen to just over 632,000 — a
slight reduction of 0.8 per cent —

but that is countered by a rise at
Warwick’s town station of 2.2 per
cent to over 567,000 journeys.
The figures relate to between
April 2015 and March this year.
At Leamington, where passengers
have to change on many of the
London services to and from Stratford, there has been an increase of
five per cent to over 2.4 million passenger journeys a year.
Elsewhere, Honeybourne, on the
Cotswold Line, has increased its
growth by 3.2 per cent (to 57,978),
while numbers are up 6.6 per cent (to
237,198) at the station in Moretonin-Marsh, which is popular with
south Warwickshire residents who
commute to London.
The Shakespeare Line Promotion
Group has cautiously welcomed the
overall increase in Stratford passengers of 1.7 per cent.
Secretary, Fraser Pithie, said:
“Growth at less than two per cent is
welcome but it demonstrates how the
current situation in Stratford prevents much greater economic
growth, estimated to be worth up to
£17m year, being enabled for the
town and its businesses.”
But Mr Pithie said while pas-
senger numbers at Stratford’s
Parkway were up sharply, they
equated to just under three people
for each train that stops there.
He added: “The Parkway continues to underperform and shows
what a poor investment and scheme
by the county council it was, but now
it’s there and in use we will support
those who use it, but in reality it will
only ever realise a financial return if
the railway line reopens south, and
through services return.”
Waterloo is the country’s busiest
station with just under 100 million
passengers, while Birmingham New
Street is the seventh busiest with
around 40 million passengers.

Arrests made as
car crime doubles
A SIGNIFICANT spike in vehicle crime has been
reported by police.
Warwickshire Police said there were 535 incidents of
theft of motor vehicles, theft from motor vehicles and
vehicle interference in October, almost double the 293
reported to the force in October last year.
Of these 269 were in the south of the county and 266 in
the north. Since then officers have been carrying out extra
patrols and intelligence-led investigations.
Over 200 incidents have been reported since the operation began and four people have been arrested.
In recent days incidents of car crime have been reported
in Lower Quinton, Brailes, Tysoe, Coughton, Bidford,
Alcester and Henley.
Inspector Matthew Pyatt said: “Vehicle crime, in whatever form, can have a huge impact on victims especially if
they are dependent on their car or van for their work or
family commitments. It is also an intrusion into someone’s
private space, and we are investing resources into this
operation with the intention of identifying offenders,
bringing them to justice and preventing further offences.”

Jail warning after
drug law change
A NEW campaign warning people
of the dangers of taking psychoactive substances — formerly known
as legal highs — was launched yesterday, Monday.
It has been named Lethal Highs and
warns that the substances that go by the
names of annihilation, herbal haze, pink
panther and green beans, among others, are
neither safe nor legal.
The Psychoactive Substances Act 2016
came into force in May to restrict the production, sale and supply of a new class of
such substances.
Punishments for the production, supply
and importation range from a prohibition
notice, which is a formal warning, to seven
years in prison.
There have been no recorded offences of
people convicted of supplying these drugs

Work starts
on over 60s
apartments

They are being built

have been reported stolen from a wooden outbuilding in Bickmarsh, near Bidford.
Police said that the items
are believed to have been
taken from a property on
Honeybourne Road, sometime between 4pm on
Friday, 11th November, and
9am on Wednesday, 16th

when

offenders removed a padlock from the door to gain

women’s clothing that were

A NEW Year’s Eve ball is hoping to raise £5,000
for the Shakespeare Puppies Appeal.

The ball takes place at the Swan’s Nest Hotel in Stratford
and organisers say the money will be enough to name a
Guide Dog Shakespeare Puppy.
The Shakespeare Puppies appeal was launched in 2013
with the aim of raising £25,000 to name five guide dog
puppies. Since then the now 30-strong Stratford-based
fundraising group has named over 20 puppies.
Tickets for the New Year’s Eve Dream Ball, as it has
been named, are £65, which includes a four-course meal,
entertainment and disco until 1am.

The red carpet was
rolled out for 14 pupils

Springfield House Community Special School on

Christmas and enjoyed a
festive lunch, while each
child was also given a
golden key so they could
choose their own gift to

The residential school,
based in Knowle near
Solihull, caters for children aged five to 11, from
disadvantaged backgrounds with a range of
mental health difficulties
and educational special
needs.

BUILDING work has started on Warwickshire Police’s
new state-of-the-art Operations Communications Centre
(OCC).
Neville House, on the Warwick Technology Park, is
being refurbished to provide a new, purpose-designed
facility handling emergency and non-emergency calls.
Changes in technology, telecoms, estates and culture
will mean officers and staff can work more efficiently
and effectively.
For the public, it will mean improved responses and
better opportunities to stay up to date on the progress of
investigations.
The building is owned by the police, and work is
being project-managed by Place Partnership. It is
expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
Warwickshire Chief Constable, Martin Jelley, said:
“As a force we strive to deliver the best policing
resources we can, whilst adapting to meet the changing
needs of our communities.
“We are undertaking a wide-reaching modernisation
program and this new facility represents a significant
milestone in our vision for the future. The work will
deliver the state-of-the-art facilities our officers and staff
deserve.”
The force’s communications centre is currently at
Leek Wootton, near Warwick.

Tea History Association’s board after
spending his early years on tea estates
in Assam and in Uganda and Kenya.

the Langharjan Tea Estate, before
moving to tea estates in Fort Portal in

Children visit Roman ruins and Egyptian Pyramids
PUPILS from Claverdon Primary
School explored the Egyptian Pyramids, discovered Roman ruins, and
experienced a lunar landing — all
without even leaving their classroom.
They took part in the virtual lesson
as part of the Google Expedition
experience on Wednesday, 23rd
November.
The techno giant sent the school a
tablet for the teacher, and cardboard
viewers and phones for every pupils,
before they set off on their adventures, which included virtual reality
panoramas of 3D images and video,
and ambient sounds.
The children were also given
details about the places they had visited, points of interest, and asked
questions afterwards.
Claverdon headteacher, Kate
Gover, said the children had an
excellent day and were truly
immersed in the experience of going
round the world with virtual reality.
“This technology immerses students in experiences that bring
abstract concepts to life and gives
students a deeper understanding of
the world beyond the classroom.”
Appointment changes

THE Lord Leycester Hospital — the 600-yearold medieval buildings of the former Guilds of
Warwick and the Elizabethan home for old soldiers — has appointed the first female head in its
445-year history.
Heidi Meyer has assumed the role of Master, a position
held from the time of Elizabeth I by only male clergymen
and retired military officers. The previous Master, Lt Col
Gerald Lesinski, has retired.
Mrs Meyer has spent 35 years working abroad,
including for the US Secretary of Defence in the Pentagon, Washington, and the US Embassy in Kabul,
Afghanistan, where the Secretary of State, Hillary
Clinton, was a regular visitor.
Her move to the Lord Leycester Hospital comes after
working as a senior political advisor to the commander of
NATO Land Forces in Turkey.
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Guild Buildings of Warwick became a place of retirement for former
soldiers, known as the Brethren. The Brethren and
Master, who live within the walls of the building, are a
living legacy of almost 450 years of uninterrupted history.
Mrs Meyer said her main objective was to work
towards a sustainable future for the Lord Leycester, which
has featured in television programmes such as Pride and
Prejudice and Dr Who.
She added: “Being the first female Master is certainly a
change in the tradition of the hospital but I think Queen
Elizabeth I would have approved. The Lord Leycester is
one of the jewels in Warwick’s crown. One of my challenges for the next five years, as we head towards our
450th anniversary, is to put in place an innovative and creative plan with local organisations to help it thrive.”

What’s in a name? Survey reveals car monikers
ONE in seven drivers name
their car — with women
more than twice as likely as
men to christen their motor.
Nearly 1,000 motorists
were quizzed by the specialist online car seller
www.BuyaCar.co.uk
to
learn more about the emotional attachment people
have to their cars.
And the results reveal
that the name most often
chosen for the family motor
is The Beast.
Also topping the list of
favourite motor monikers
are Arnie, Pixie, Leo and
Suzi.
The findings suggest that
people still attribute personality to their cars, despite
modern vehicles often
being accused of lacking
the character of their older
counterparts.
The names chosen for
their car by men and
women also suggest that
girls are the most zany
when it comes to christening their car.
BuyaCar.co.uk classified
the 139 names revealed in
their survey as ‘male’,
‘female’ or ‘silly’ and discovered that men choose
equally between the three
categories.
That means a guy is just
as likely to name his car
something like Doris or
Hugo as he is to choose a
more abstract or comic
name like Tardis or Vlad
The Impaler.
Women are even more
likely to choose less conventional names for their
car — apparently favouring
cartoon characters in particular, such as Asterix or
Bambi.
But it’s The Beast which
tops the chart of car names
and it doesn’t always signify a particularly aggres-

Warwickshire County Council is preparing the Warwickshire Minerals Local

This is a statutory consultation on a Publication draft of the Minerals Local
Plan which will be published on 9th December 2016, pursuant to the above
regulations. It provides an opportunity for stakeholders and communities to
make representations on the ‘soundness’ and legal compliance of the
document prior to its submission to the Secretary of State for Communities
and Local Government for independent examination.
The Publication Minerals Local Plan is available for inspection and comment
from Friday 9th December 2016 until Friday 3rd February 2017 (closing at
5pm). The consultation and other related and supporting documents are

STRATFORD Town began life
without Richard Gregory in perfect fashion as they recorded a 52 victory over St Neots Town at
the DCS Stadium on Saturday.
Town’s top scorer left the club this
week to sign for local rivals Leamington, but Carl Adams’ side responded
in emphatic fashion against the struggling Saints.
Edwin Ahenkorah helped himself to
a hat-trick, while Mike Taylor and
Liam Francis were also on target.
“That was just what we needed,”
beamed a delighted Adams.
“I believe that we’ve played well in
recent weeks without getting what we
deserved, but we certainly put on the
style this afternoon and showed that we
are a very good team.
“Our ambition this season is to close
the gap on the mid-table teams in this
league, and this result shows that we
are well on the way to achieving that.
“In this game we’ve also had to cope
with the departure of Richard Gregory
following on from losing Dior Angus
and Jamie Sheldon, and not many
squads would have done that.
“But Edwin Ahenkorah and Mike
Taylor have done the business and it’s
also allowed us to give some game
time to Charlie Evans and Dylan
Parker (youth team graduates).
“We can now expect a tough game at
Biggleswade, but I’m targeting the following two home games against Hayes
and Yeading and Kings Langley for
maximum points.”
The win moves Town up to 16th in
the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier,
five points clear of the relegation zone.
Town go to Biggleswade on Tuesday
before they welcome Hayes and
Yeading United to the DCS on Saturday.

A SLOW start proved costly
for Stratford as they went
down to a 31-20 defeat at
Dudley Kingswinford on Saturday.
The Black and Whites
fought back with tries from
Callum Cook, Craig Voisey
and Simon Baldwyn, but it
wasn’t enough as Stratford
suffered their seventh defeat
of the campaign.
Jon Duncan added a penalty
and converted one of the
scores.
The defeat sees Stratford
slip down to fifth in Midlands
1 West.
Elsewhere, Midlands 3
West (South) high flyers Shipston-on-Stour thrashed Bedworth 48-0 at Mayo Road.
There were also wins for
Claverdon and Alcester in
Midlands 4 West (South).
Claverdon edged out Kings
Norton 18-14, while Alcester
made it eight league wins in a
row with a 27-12 success at
Redditch.
