PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF
The average varsity girls’ basketball team typically has at least 10 members, enabling exhausted
players to rest while other team members take their place on court; but as the NCA Lady
Warriors proved this season, they are anything but average. Featuring just six members, the NCA
Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team demonstrated a tireless passion in what was a history-making
season for the team and new coach, Byron Smith. Not only did the girls win 14 of the 18 games
they played, but they won their first play-off game and narrowly missed becoming District
Champions by just two points in the last moments of the 2013 championship game.
NCA Athletic Director and Lady Warriors fan, Kyle
Kennedy, said, “Coach Smith has done an outstanding job
in leading these girls to numerous wins. The commitment
and perseverance of the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team
proves that with hard work and dedication a few people can
overcome the odds and achieve great things.”
A team comprised of top talent, NCA Warrior, Rebekah
Vinal, who averaged 34 points per game, was named Most
Valuable Player (MVP) of the District, an honor that is
voted on by all of the teams in the district.
Best of all, each player was honored by the district,
a distinction that becomes even more astounding when one takes into account that there were
over 50 girls competing for just 12 places on the first and second all-district teams. The members
of the 2012/2013 NCA Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team were:
