To inform, guide and support pregnant
smokers, new mothers and their families, to
promote a smoke free culture in the home.
To offer additional antenatal support.
To identify and support antenatal women
who wish to breastfeed their babies.
To identify and support mothers who are
breast-feeding.
To promote breast-feeding to the wider
community.
To offer additional postnatal support for all
women dependant on need.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES















To contact identified expectant mothers and provide information regarding
breast feeding and breast feeding peer support.
To continue to provide breast-feeding peer support after the baby is born
as agreed with the mother.
To promote breast-feeding to the wider community in a variety of ways at
every opportunity.
To develop and maintain a breast-feeding support group.
To work along side the Children’s Centre Early Health team - Midwifery
and Health Visiting to develop locally appropriate early health services.
To receive appropriate role related referrals from local workers and health
professionals in the community to offer additional antenatal support.
To refer to professionals as necessary.
To develop and provide a smoke cessation service for pregnant women,
new mothers and their families.
To maintain a record of involvement with family.
To complete monitoring forms.
To participate in the research and evaluation of the project.
To have an understanding of safeguarding and child protection issues and
to act appropriately should areas of concern arise, in line with Local
Authority and Partner Agencies core corporate standards, policies and
procedures.
To be proactively involved in staff development, attend training courses
and regional meetings as appropriate.
To attend and participate effectively in team, supervision and appraisal
meetings.
Any other relevant duties and responsibilities as may arise.
PRINCIPAL AND EXTERNAL
CONTACTS
To develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with:

Visitors, consumers and members of the public using the Children’s
Centre facilities and services.

Immediate colleagues within the Children Centre and related staff e.g.
health visitors, midwifes, local training providers and others as
appropriate

Colleagues and other stakeholders in the Local Authority and other
organisations who support this agenda
