Thank you for the many gifts you have brought to us and for the sacrifices you have made. Sisters will be joining us at our 10:30 Mass this weekend and then will be picked up by a trolley car to visit various locations around the Minneapolis Saint Paul area. Thank you for beginning your day at Lumen Christi! We were chosen because we have so many Sisters in our parish. They will be introduced at the end of Mass and we will send them on their way with a sung blessing (like we do for CLW). After 10:30 Mass, you will have the opportunity to meet and visit with the Catholic Sisters from many congregations in Minnesota, who will be “trolleying” around MSP, celebrating Catholic Sisters Week! 2017 Catholic Services Appeal There is still time to make a gift to the CSA. The CSA is the way in which collective ministries in the Archdiocese are funded. Please prayerfully consider God’s gifts in your life and consider making a pledge. Every gift is important. What could God do with your gift? Please pray for Cecelia Frost who died recently. May she rest in peace with Our Risen Savior. Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross are prayed at 5:30 pm in church on the Fridays during Lent. It is a reflective and prayerful time of community prayer on the sufferings of our Savior. All are invited to walk the stations following the cross bearer or you may remain and pray in your pew. Please join us for this special Lenten prayer. Bakers Needed We need people to bake cookies and bars for the Easter Vigil Dessert Reception. If you are able to help please call Sue Kaufenberg at 651-699-6130. Thanks. 18th Annual Used Book Sale - Thank you! Thank you to the Lumen Christi Catholic Community for making the Used Book Sale a success! There was an outpouring of good will and community building; Highland Catholic students, Confirmation candidates, and parish volunteers set-up and hundreds more shopped! Book sales generated $3,268.50 for our school fund. With faith and gratitude, Beth Leonidas and Amy Murphy LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Lenten Decor Serves Lenten Ritual Deep purple fabrics shimmer with promise: they embrace the Altar, encircle the font, cover the base of the Good Friday cross and "water" the earthen jar; Stations of the Cross draped in purple and their 14 candles mark Lenten devotion; empty Ambry shelves and evaporating baptismal water cry "thirsty"; seeded eucalyptus arrangements, grape-vine wreaths and multiple stalks of pussy willow offer the promise of spring. Each symbol roots us as a faith-community in prayer; each symbol invites us to go deeper into the Lenten reality of our lives. I am grateful to parishioners Lori McCabe (landscape artist), Jennifer Soucheray (fabric designer), Laura Cullen, Linda and Greg Haines, Shellee Micko, Joe Soucheray, Jon Guion, Rick Countryman and Sharon Siegrist for their membership and efforts on behalf of the seasonal décor committee. Faith Formation Ministry Council discussed what we would like to share about our council and our goals for collaboration at the February meeting. We will present an idea for an online volunteer database. We will also share information about welcoming and educational materials for visitors and those who may not know the words to recite during Mass. Youth Group An Invitation for High School Students It is pretty amazing that God came and walked among us, that he shared our suffering and died to save us. We repeat these truths all the time, so we never forget, but we also stop being amazed. It is an old tradition for Christians to walk the path that Jesus took to Calvary, trying to immerse ourselves more fully into the presence of Jesus and the story of our salvation. On Good Friday, high school students will reenact the story as the Living Stations of the Cross. As we prepare during Lent for this prayer experience, we enter more deeply into the story. And when we use our talents to lead our parish community, we fulfill our mission to spread the good news. As a high school student in the Lumen Christi Community you are invited to share your talents. If you would like to find out more, please contact Karen Kirkhoff at [email protected] or 651-698-5581X120. This is a great opportunity for prayer, faith enrichment and fellowship. I will look forward to hearing from you! Karen Kirkhoff Finance Council Appr oval of our investment policy by the Parish Council that incorporates our best practices of Catholic organizations. Review of the new financial reporting both at parish and school with new oversight or our CFO and Finance audit process. Review of possible capital improvements for our existing tenant and the Montreal site as part of existing leasing contract. Pastoral Care/Social Justice Ministry Council is working systematically on the creation of a pastoral care committee to coordinate parish services in this area. The School Ministry Council welcomes Mrs. Angie Fitzner as the designated non-parishioner member of the council. A new School Start Date Policy was written and approved. This school is grateful for the continued support of the Home and School Committee and the Men’s club. The Worship Ministry Council worked to develop its 2017 work plan agenda. Plans are being developed to connect with the ministries within the WMC purview as well as reaching out to other ministry committees with similar interests. LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY The Sacredness of Water “Water supplies used to be relatively constant, but now in many places, demands exceed the sustainable supply. Large cities, dependent on significant supplies of water, have experienced periods of shortage, and at critical moments these have not always been administered with sufficient oversight and impartiality.” #28, Laudato Si’ Today I look out the window at my quiet tree-lined street and wonder how this clear water came to be in the glass in my hand. My grandparents needed a bucket without a hole in it to get water to the house from the pump. It was not complicated. In this large city my garbage is taken away never to be heard from again and water arrives magically. I don’t really know the source of the water I drink, if water can be said to have a source. Does the air I breathe have a source? Aren’t my lungs just a rest stop? Water flows down mountains, sprays, drips, seeps into basements, runs, evaporates into clouds. Laudato Si’ asks me to consider what I have in my hands and consider why other hands are empty, but I don’t even know how the plumbing in my house connects to city water. When my son was little, he told me our house had bones. He meant the white PVC pipes under the sink. What is my connection to pipes deep underground that I will never see, or sophisticated pumps plunging into aquifers in Nebraska? Whose bones are they? -MRJ, on behalf of the Laudato Si Study Group: The Sacredness of Water Other Articles on Water The following articles can be found on the homepage of the parish website: (1, 2, & 3 were in the New Y ork Times in the last month.) 1. Music Ministry Reflection I have been in the Lumen Christi Choir for 18 years. I love the music and it makes me very happy. Thank you for making me a part of this community. I like it very much and it means a lot to me. Thank you also for all of the help and support this community has given me. - Ed Falk History of Eucharistic Adoration In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in various forms of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Some people suggest that this recovers an ancient tradition in the church, when in fact the practice belongs to a later time. The custom of showing the consecrated host to the people, encased in a vessel called a monstrance, developed in a period of history when even very pious people received Communion only rarely. The opportunity to see the host raised high above the head of the priest at Mass, or to see the host exposed outside of Mass, was thought by many to be a form of spiritual Communion. The Blessed Sacrament was not reserved in church buildings in the first centuries of the church. In those early years, of course, people met in borrowed “house churches,” gathering on the Lord’s Day for community, apostolic teaching, the breaking of the bread, and the prayers, as Acts of the Apostles tells us. Dispersed, people went their way into the workaday world until the next assembly. Weighing down their hearts was the absence of brothers and sisters, not only the sick, but those imprisoned for the faith. The custom of sending some pieces of consecrated bread from the Lord’s table began to take hold as a way of assuring the sick and imprisoned of their bonds of faith and affection with the community from whom they were separated. The first and enduring purpose for reserving the Eucharist is viaticum for the dying. Our Catholic practice of reserving the consecrated host both for adoration and Communion of the sick and dying is a cherished tradition. LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY March Food Drive Food security is “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” Food insecurity means that “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” The Harvard School Breakfast Research Summary found that lack of adequate nutrition can impair a child’s ability to concentrate at school. When kids get a healthy breakfast, there is an average increase of 17.5% on standardized Math scores. For the first time in history, over half of public school students in this country are from lowincome families. Three out of four public school teachers say they see students regularly come to school hungry. We must remember our brothers and sisters in Christ. Food and groceries will be collected throughout the month. Put checks in the regular collection and mark them “Francis Basket.” Do it. Justice Lumen Christi Justice Lobby Your Legislators!
