Alice Game Jams Press Release

Successful participation of two partner schools at the Alice
Game Jam event
The students created their first mobile games using Pocket Code
The Alice Game Jam took place during the international Computer Science Education Week
between 7th and 13th of December 2015. The No One Left Behind project that aims to promote
inclusive game-making among children, was an official partner of this online Game Jam.
During the Alice Game Jam 95 games from different countries such as Austria, England, Italy
and Spain were submitted, 43 of them were created using the free mobile application “Pocket
Code”.
Among the participants were also the partner schools of the No One Left Behind project –the
Akademische Gymnasium (Graz, Austria) and the SAFA Foundation (Andalucía, Spain).
Following the rules of competition, the pupils from SAFA San Luis and SAFA Úbeda submitted
four games applied to mathematics and the Alice related theme.
Students from SAFA Úbeda in the secondary level coordinated by their teacher Pedro Ariza,
built a very complex game applied, using all required aspects of the context and implemented
the game in three languages: English, Spanish and German; using sensors, collision detection
and they also designed all the graphic elements.
In the case of SAFA San Luis from Puerto de Santa María the students were coordinated by the
teachers Emilio Florido, Pepe Gallardo, and Alberto Mateos respectively participated from 2nd,
3rd and 4th of ESO. The pupils developed 3 games on mathematics which applied to prime
numbers, fractions, and trigonometry.
In Graz their teacher Magdalena Strauss coordinated her 2nd grade students at Akademisches
Gymnasium. The pupils created a vocabulary game to memorise words in 17 different
languages. The pupils developed this game directly on their phones and furthermore designed
all graphical assets by themselves. Within their games they used different tools provided by
“Pocket Code”, like inclination sensors, collision detection and variables to create a fun and
educational game.
Within a raffle the organizers of the Alice Game Jam have selected a total of 9 finalists
programs based on correct and incorrect statements which included the game designed by
Safa San Luis students as well as the games created by the pupils of Akademisches
Gymnasium Graz.

‘No One Left Behind’ is an innovation action co-funded by Horizon 2020 Framework Programme,
which uses video games techniques to enhance the students’ abilities.
The project is currently running through 3 experimental pilots in five schools involving about 600
students over 9 - 17 years old, across up to 12 subjects, in the United Kingdom, Austria and
Spain. The results are showing us the great potential of this project for educational systems.
‘No One Left Behind’ is a 30-month project with a budget of €3.2 million that has started on
January 2015 and that involves a consortium of European educationalists, computer scientists,
videogame companies and designers and innovation managers. The project is co-ordinated by
INMARK Europa (Spain) and it includes the participation of 7 key partners coming from 4
European countries: Austria, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom.
