Post-Workshop Activities - Hertfordshire Grid for Learning

Post-Workshop Activities
Show Racism the Red Card’s workshops are designed to help teachers and pupils tackle
racism and promote equality within the school environment. This document provides ideas
for follow-up activities which can be undertaken in school.
We are developing a section of our website devoted to work undertaken in schools, so
please e-mail your photographs and reports to [email protected] if you would like your
work included on the website.
Show Racism the Red Card National Schools Competition
This competition runs every year from and is an accessible and engaging way for pupils to
think about issues surrounding racism. For more information please visit:

Action Plans
You will have been given a copy of Show Racism the Red Card’s Action Plan. This is designed
to help young people think about what they have learned during the workshop and what
they can now do to combat racism. Please encourage the young people to complete this
action plan. Show Racism the Red Card would be delighted to receive some of these back or
provide prizes for the best one.
Postcards
Your pupils have been given Show Racism the Red Card postcards. We ask pupils who have
taken action against racism since the workshop to write down exactly how they have done
this on the back of the postcard and send them back to us. This action against racism could
be anything from making an anti-racist poster or poem to finding out about another culture
or religion. Please encourage your pupils to do this.
Active Citizenship
Encourage and support the young people to organise an assembly, form an anti-racism
group or support network or hold an anti-racism event, (Show Racism the Red Card
resources such as posters and stickers are available from Show Racism the Red Card for
postage charge only please see the Show Racism the Red Card website

Show Racism the Red Card Education Pack
The Show Racism the Red Card DVD and Education Pack have been left with the school. The
education pack is 22 pages long and includes extension activities which build upon the key
lessons in the workshop. Some of these activities are mentioned below:
Racism and Football
Racism on the Pitch (40 minutes) Pages 3-5: Explores Samuel Eto’o’s story in more depth
and allows the young people to think about how racism manifests itself in football and what
they can do if they witness this.
Origins of Racism
What happens next…? (15 minutes) Page 6: Allows young people to talk about stereotyping
in greater depth and the dangers this brings. For older children, the extension activity
outlined on page 8 could be a good way of exploring how the media can perpetuate
stereotypes.
Experiences of Racism
Anthony Walker’s Story (45 minutes) Pages 10 – 11: A very powerful activity which enables
young people to look more closely at the consequences of racism. Allows pupils to learn and
use skills of empathy, research and writing for a specific audience.
Dealing with Racism
Reaching Out (10 minutes) Page 14: Allows young people to consider how individuals,
schools and communities can combat racism and employs skills of decision making and
empathy.
Frequently Asked Questions are listed on pages 18 and 19 and are designed to help
teachers discuss issues around racism and discrimination.
