WAICU Department Chair Workshop Monday, May 22, 2017 Concordia University Wisconsin AGENDA 9:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 9:40 a.m. Registration, coffee, and conversation Welcome—Dr. Patrick Ferry, President, Concordia University Wisconsin, invited Workshop overview and review of survey responses 10:00 a.m. Morning Session: “What are the Problems that Department Chairs Face?” The morning will begin with a brief overview, followed by in-depth small group discussion and analysis among department chairs from different institutions of actual case studies involving the following topics: · Faculty performance issues & evaluation; · Having difficult conversations; · Managing student issues; · Conflict management 12:00 p.m. Lunch and Networking: Participants will submit their key issues prior to the workshop. These issues will be displayed on tables during lunch and participants may choose which topic they wish to explore and discuss. 1:00 p.m. Afternoon Session: “How to Build Your Toolkit for Successful Departmental Leadership” Chief Academic Officers Panel: Sharing insights on leadership styles, developing a strategic focus on the duties of the department chair, and key priorities for advancing the institution’s mission through the academic department. 1:45 p.m. Building upon the points raised in the CAO panel, department chairs from different institutions will engage in small group discussion and analysis of actual case studies involving the following scenarios: · Building a department that works well together · Engaging in the departmental assessment plan · Working effectively with other departments and with external constituencies 3:45 p.m. Meeting wrap-up: summarizing insights 4:00 p.m. Adjournment
