Discuss programs used: Word,
WordPerfect, Excel, etc., and/or hand
written materials.
Determine how the formatist prefers to
receive materials: e-mail, disk, or CD.
Discuss job costs and payment
procedures.

- 1.5” left and 1” top, right, bottom
 Page numbers – decide on location – bottom for
header pages, top for other pages or all at the
top right corner or centered at the bottom
 Figures – can use original and tape in
 Tables – sideways verses top and bottom
 Appendix items – reduce and use originals
 IRB form – copy of signed approval page only
 Abstract – limited to 350 words on 1 page
 Title and Signature Page – align exactly with
each other

 Don’t
use bold face type.
 Don’t use right justification. Ragged
edges are best.
 Font size is important. It helps determine
how many words are on each page.
 Be consistent. Always do the exact same
thing each time.
 Decide if tables should be numbered in
roman or arabic numerals.

Remember
that the final proof is
the writer’s responsibility. The
formatist is neither an editor nor
a proof reader.
Don’t type the table of contents
or the list of tables. It is better to
let the typist do this so that the
contents match the text exactly.
