In order to facilitate the use of these filters in the UV, the design wavelength of the NDUV series of filters is 300 nm. While the lower limit of the spectral range is limited by the absorption of the light by the substrate, the upper variation in the limit is somewhat arbitrary in that it is dependent on the opacity of the nickel coating since UV fused silica has good transmission properties up to 2.1 µm. Note that when defined this way, the optical density is synonymous with absorbance. The graphs below have a series of plots that show the typical performance of the ND filters from 200 to 2100 nm. Although these are reflective ND filters, the Inconel coating does absorb some of the incident light, which limits the use of these filters to low-power applications.
